·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 14:66-72

Read the passage below:

 Mark 14:66-72 NIV

Peter Disowns Jesus

66While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by. 67When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him.
"You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said.
68But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking about," he said, and went out into the entryway.[a]
69When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, "This fellow is one of them." 70Again he denied it.
After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean."
71He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, "I don't know this man you're talking about."
72Immediately the rooster crowed the second time.[b] Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice[c] you will disown me three times." And he broke down and wept.

Luke 22:56-62 NIV
56A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, "This man was with him."
57But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.
58A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of them."
"Man, I am not!" Peter replied.
59About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean."
60Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times." 62And he went outside and wept bitterly.

John 18:16-18 NIV
16but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there and brought Peter in.
17"You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked Peter.
      He replied, "I am not."
18It was cold, and the servants and officials stood around a fire they had made to keep warm. Peter also was standing with them, warming himself.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        The pressure of circumstances will reveal my weakness, which is no surprise to Jesus.
·        All that God says will literally come true.

Who are the people if any?
·        Peter, a servant girl of the high priest, other people standing around Peter.

    What are they doing?
·        After Jesus has been arrested Peter waits in the courtyard of the high priest warming himself by a fire.

Where does this take place?
·        In the high priest’s courtyard in Jerusalem.

When does this take place?
·        After the Last Supper, the night of the Passover.

2. Lesson:   (What do I learn from this passage?)

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus predicted Peter’s denial.

Mark 14:27-31 NIV
Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial
"You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it is written:
" 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'  But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not."  "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times." But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        Peter denied being one of Jesus’ disciples because of fear.
·        Followers of Christ are commanded to stand firm in their faith.

1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV
Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.

1 Corinthians 16:13 NIV
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.

·        Peter lied about knowing Jesus. When we lie we not only hurt others but we are hurting ourselves. When a follower of Jesus lies, guilt and turmoil overtake the heart and mind of that believer because the Holy Spirit will convict that person, and prompt them, to repent from their deceptive ways.

John 14:26 NIV
But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 16:13 NIV
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

John 16:8 NIV
When he (The Holy Spirit) comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

John 9:41 NIV
Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.

·        Peter knew Jesus but sin and fear reigned in His heart. Because of His lack of faith in all that Jesus taught Him, Peter chose to lie and save himself from persecution. We need to understand that persecution is part of the Christian life.

2 Timothy 3:12 NIV
In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Peter denies Christ 3 times.
·        After the rooster crows Peter realizes what Jesus said would happened did.
·        Peter broke down and wept.

The Luke passage describes the scene this way:
" Just as he (Peter) was speaking, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him:

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Many of Jesus’ predictions have come to fruition. There are still some that have not taken place yet but as followers of Jesus we can be assured they will.
·        Those who deny Christ will end up weeping and in despair.
·        God is sovereign and in control of pre-ordained events.
·        Walking with Jesus requires endurance because we will share in His suffering.

Romans 8:17 NIV
Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Titus 2:2 NIV
Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.

2 Timothy 2:12 NIV
if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us;

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us that Jesus has authority from God to reveal future events.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Sovereign, Prophet, Suffering Servant

     B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Through prophecy

     C. His emotions:
·

D. His views:
·        His disciples will disown Him and scatter fulfilling prophecy.

Zechariah 13:7 NIV
"Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!"
declares the LORD Almighty. "Strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·         Even though Peter denied Christ Jesus reinstated Him. (See John 21:15-25)

Romans 4:8 NIV
Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him.

 3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        How have I denied Christ in my thoughts or actions for fear for of being identified with Him or His people?
·        Have I ignored a warning form Jesus because it involves something of which I think I can never be guilty?
·        When have I, like Peter, wept over revealed sin in my life?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
