The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 83

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 83:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

John 3:16-17 NIV
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Romans 1:21 NIV
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 15:6-15

Read the passage below:

 Mark 15:6-15 NIV
6Now it was the custom at the Feast to release a prisoner whom the people requested. 7A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. 8The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
9"Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate, 10knowing it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.
12"What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?" Pilate asked them.
    13"Crucify him!" they shouted.
14"Why? What crime has he committed?" asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, "Crucify him!"
15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

John 18:38-40 NIV
38"What is truth?" Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, "I find no basis for a charge against him. 39But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release 'the king of the Jews'?"
40They shouted back, "No, not him! Give us Barabbas!" Now Barabbas had taken part in a rebellion.

John 19:1 NIV
Jesus Sentenced to be Crucified
Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        It is impossible to escape responsibility for making a decision about the Lord Jesus Christ.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Pilate releases Barabbas to satisfy the Jews and their Passover custom.
·        Pilate orders that Jesus be flogged and crucified.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        The chief priests handed over Jesus out of envy.  Jesus’ ministry was a threat to the Jewish leaders. They wanted to control the people but Jesus wanted to set them free. We can help free others from their spiritual blindness by pointing them to Jesus.  (Check out the Scripture below)

John 8:31-32 NIV
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Romans 8:1-2New International Version (NIV)
Life Through the Spirit
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

John 11:25 NIV
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;

John 14:6 NIV
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

·        The chief priests stir up the crowd to in order to get Jesus crucified.  Persecution and trials are part of the Christian life.

John 15:20 NIV
Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

·        We should not act like the chief priests but rather live a life that is holy pleasing to God. In order to do this we are ourselves must be transformed.

 Romans 12:1-2 NIV
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual  act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        The crowd tries to get Pilate to release Barabbas based on a Passover Feast custom.
·        Pilate offers to have Jesus released.
·        The chief priests stir up the crowd to have Barabbas released.
·        Pilate asks the crowd what they wanted him to do with Jesus.
·        The crowd shouts their request to have Jesus crucified.
·        Pilate, in order to satisfy the crowd, has Jesus taken away to be flogged and crucified.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus is truly the King of the Jews. Many of the Jews however, were looking for a different kind of king who would free them from Roman rule. Even though the Jews knew Old Testament scripture they did not fully understand God’s plan of salvation and therefore missed the fact that Jesus was their Messiah.
·        Jesus was flogged and crucified.

Isaiah 53:3 NIV
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Isaiah 53:5 NIV
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us that Jesus willingly suffered in order to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.
·        To show us that the Jews did not recognize the Messiah even though the prophets told about Him through God’s written Word.
·        To remind us of the importance of understanding God’s Word.
·        To remind us how dangerous it is to take our eyes off the truth and focus in on our own personal desires.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        King of the Jews, Suffering Servant, Lamb of God

Isaiah 53:7 NIV
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

     B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        God speaks to us today through the Bible.

     C. His emotions:
·

D. His views:
·        Jesus, following God’s plan, prepared His disciples for the Cross. Jesus, through God’s Word, has prepared us for His return.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
Jesus saved us from our sins and made it possible for us to be in a right relationship with God.

 3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        Where am I allowing envy or other people to push me into wrong actions?
·        Where am I pretending that I don’t know God’s will instead of being obedient to it?
·        Regarding my own life, what shall I do with Jesus?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 15:1-5

Read the passage below:

 Mark 15:1-5 NIV
Jesus Before Pilate

1Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, reached a decision. They bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
2"Are you the king of the Jews?" asked Pilate.
"Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied.
3The chief priests accused him of many things. 4So again Pilate asked him, "Aren't you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of."
5But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.

John 18:28-37 NIV
Jesus Before Pilate

28Then the Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness the Jews did not enter the palace; they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?"
30"If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."
31Pilate said, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law."
"But we have no right to execute anyone," the Jews objected. 32This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.
33Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
34"Is that your own idea," Jesus asked, "or did others talk to you about me?"
35"Am I a Jew?" Pilate replied. "It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?"
36Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place."
37"You are a king, then!" said Pilate.
Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

·        Is there a new thought to me? An encouraging thought?

………………………………………………………………………………………

Here is my layout for: Mark 15:1-5

1.    Content: What is this passage about?

·        After being handed over to Pilate by all the Sanhedrin, Jesus acknowledged His kingship but refused to answer the amazed Pilate regarding the chief priest’s false accusations.

Who are the people if any?
·        Jesus, Pilate, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin.

    What are they doing?
·        The Jews led Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor Pilate.

Where does this take place?
·        Pilate’s Palace.

When does this take place?
·        During the Passover.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        After the truth has been stated, silence speaks louder than words.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        From the Gospel of John Jesus tells Pilate "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

John 5:24 NIV
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

John 8:31-32 NIV
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

John 10:24-28 NIV
The Jews gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly."
Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The miracles I do in my Father's name speak for me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        Pilate did not Judge Jesus based upon what others accused Him of. Pilate asked Jesus questions to try to get to the truth.  In the same way we should not be quick to judge but seek to find the truth before we make a decision about something. As far as spiritual matters go we should know what the Bible says so we can be accurate about God’s truth.  We don’t want others to stumble based on inaccurate interpretation on what the Bible says.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        The teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin decided to hand Jesus over to Pilate.
·        Pilate begins to question Jesus and asked Him if He was the King of the Jews.
·        Jesus told Pilate that He was.
·        Pilate tries to get Jesus to answer other accusations against Him because he was accused of many other things by the Jewish Leaders.
·        Jesus does not defend himself against the accusations.
·        Pilate was amazed that Jesus did not defend Himself.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus once again fulfills prophecy.

Isaiah 53:7 NIV
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

·        Jesus’ Kingdom is not of this world. Many of the Jews were looking for and earthly King like David, so many did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah.

·        Because the Jews brought Jesus to Pilate for criminal prosecution Jesus would eventually be judged by Roman law which led to His crucifixion. This fulfilled the prophecy about the cross.

Isaiah 53:5 NIV
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us that Jesus could have defended Himself by refuting the charges against Him but didn’t.  Even with the knowledge that he would suffer, Jesus was going to be obedient to the Father and go to the cross for our sake.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
  • King of the Jews.

     B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Jesus was silent fulfilling prophecy.

     C. His emotions:
·        Calm under pressure

D. His views:
·        Jesus understood His kingship and was given authority from God to reign.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus fulfilled the prophecies about Himself leading to our salvation.

 3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        When the Lord is silent toward me, do I examine my motives or defend my action?
·        Where should I be stating the truth in love?
·        How can I stand for Jesus without defending myself, being fully under His control?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.
