This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Psalm 2:1-2 NIV

The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together
against the LORD and against his Anointed One.

Zechariah 13:7 NIV

against the man who is close to me!"
       declares the LORD Almighty.
       "Strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered,
and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

1 John 4:10 NIV
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 14:43-50

Read the passage below:

Mark 14:43-50 NIV
Jesus Arrested
43Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard." 45Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. 46The men seized Jesus and arrested him. 47Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48"Am I leading a rebellion," said Jesus, "that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? 49Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled." 50Then everyone deserted him and fled.

·        The chief priests along with the teachers of the law, and the elders, send Judas, a crowd of soldiers and some officials, to arrest Jesus.

·        The Garden of Gethsemane.

When does this take place?
·        After the Last Supper, the night of the Passover.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        Because God is sovereign and His Word will be fulfilled, I do not to panic in persecution.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus explains while He was being arrested that “The Scriptures must be fulfilled.”

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        Peter attempts to thwart the arrest by drawing a sword and attacking one of the men in the crowd trying to arrest Jesus.

Here is the passage from John 18:10-11 that gives a little more detail:

John 18:10-11
10Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.)
11Jesus commanded Peter, "Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?"

This is another example of Peter trying to circumvent God’s plan. Peter began to assert his own will into a situation that God ordained for the purpose of the greater plan of Salvation.  God’s perspective, ideas and thoughts are different from ours. There is a reason why we don’t understand everything God is doing.

Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV
8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,"
       declares the LORD.
9 "As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Below is this passage about Peter rebuking Jesus.  Jesus’ attempts to explain to the disciples what must happen to Him. Jesus explains that He must suffer and die in order to fulfill God’s plan of Salvation. Peter does not like what Jesus is telling Him and lets Jesus know it. Jesus on the other hand rebukes Peter for trying to interfere with God’s plan.

Mark 8:31-33 NIV
31He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men."

Couple of  points:
·        We should not get in the way of God’s plan.
·        We don’t have the mind of God.
·        In order to live the life we are called to live, we need to have a Godly perspective and pay close attention to what God’s Word is saying to us. There is much wisdom in the Bible that we need to take to heart. Our goal should be to read God’s Word and apply God’s principles to our lives.
·        Judas betrays Jesus. We need to think about the ways we betray Christ with actions and inner motives that linger from our “Old Self”. Remember, as followers of Christ we are a new creation in Him.

2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Ephesians 4:22-24 NIV
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness

What are the main points in this passage?
·         Judas Betrays Jesus by leading a contingent of soldiers and officials to arrest Jesus.
·        Judas arranges a signal with the soldiers to arrest Jesus by giving Jesus a Kiss.
·        The soldiers arrest Jesus after Judas gives Him a Kiss.
·        Peter drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
·        Jesus explains to everyone present that His arrest was the scripture being fulfilled.

Psalm 41:9 NIV
Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

·        Everyone deserts Jesus and flees. According to the Matthew passage, more specifically, all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus’ betrayal and arrest was part of scripture being fulfilled.
·        Jesus was willing to be arrested in order to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To show that God’s Word is truth and that the Scriptures were once again fulfilled.  Jesus had foretold that He would be betrayed:

Mark 14:17-21 NIV
When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me."

·        To remind us the Jesus was obedient to God and His plan of salvation. Jesus did not resist being arrested.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Teacher (Rabbi), Lamb of God, Authoritative, Prophetic

Lamb of God is one of the titles given to Jesus in the New Testament. The title refers to Jesus' role as the sacrificial lamb, atoning for the sins of man.

John 1:29 NIV
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

     B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Through His prophetic teaching and willingness to be obedient to God.

     C. His emotions:
·        Calm, focused and determined to fulfill God’s plan

D. His views:
·        God is sovereign and His plans will not be changed.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus was obedient to God and willing to be arrested in order to fulfill the scripture.  Beyond that, Jesus was willing to die for our sins.

 3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        How is God’s word being fulfilled in my present pressure or persecution, and how am I responding?
·        Am I able to stand in persecution because I know the Scriptures?
·        When have I betrayed Christ or a friend? Will I confess that sin and receive forgiveness?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
