Scripture
to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:
Matthew 10:22 NIV
All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
Isaiah
53:4-6 NIV
Surely
he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows,
yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.
yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.
But he was
pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

This
Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:
Mark 14:51-65
Read
the passage below:

Mark
14:51-65 NIV
51A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following
Jesus. When they seized him, 52he fled naked, leaving his garment
behind.
Before
the Sanhedrin
53They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests,
elders and teachers of the law came together. 54Peter followed him
at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with
the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
55The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for
evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not
find any. 56Many testified falsely against him, but their statements
did not agree.
57Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: 58"We
heard him say, 'I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will
build another, not made by man.' " 59Yet even then their
testimony did not agree.
60Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus,
"Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are
bringing against you?" 61But Jesus remained silent and gave no
answer.
Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ,[a] the Son of the Blessed One?"
Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ,[a] the Son of the Blessed One?"
62"I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of
Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of
heaven."
63The high priest tore his clothes. "Why do we need any more
witnesses?" he asked. 64"You have heard the blasphemy.
What do you think?"
They
all condemned him as worthy of death. 65Then some began to spit at
him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said,
"Prophesy!" And the guards took him and beat him.

2. Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Following Jesus may result in persecution and
humiliation.

Those who aim to condemn will condemn regardless of

·
As followers of Jesus, we may have our inalienable
rights violated as His were.
Is
there a warning, command or promise?
·
Caiaphas
asks Jesus if He was the Christ. Jesus
replied
that he was the Messiah and continues
on to say “And you
will see the Son of Man sitting at the
right hand of the Mighty
One and coming on the clouds of
heaven."
Daniel
prophesied about this as well:
Daniel 7:13 NIV
"In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.
"In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.
Jesus foretold
that he would be sitting at the right hand of God. Scripture confirms that this
is what happened:
Mark 16:19 NIV
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.
After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God.
Colossians 3:1 NIV
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
Hebrews 1:3 NIV
The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
Hebrews 12:2 NIV
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Is
there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
The
young man following Jesus runs away naked after he escaped arrest. As a
follower of Christ we must not be overcome with fear and run away at the first
sign of trouble. When our faith is tested we should stand firm.
1 Corinthians 16:13 NIV
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.
Galatians 5:1 NIV
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Ephesians 6:14 NIV
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
·
Many
testified falsely against Jesus. If we claim to be followers of Jesus our
testimony about who Jesus is should be truthful and according to God’s written
Word. The lives we live and model for others confirm who we are in Christ. We
should not be hypocritical while living out our faith because this could cause
others to stumble.
What are the main points in this passage?
·
A
young man following Jesus flees naked after an attempt to arrest him.

After
Jesus is arrested He is taken to see the High Priest Caiaphas.
·
The

·
Jesus
was beaten.
Isaiah
53:7 NIV
He was

he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·
Jesus
Rose from the Dead after 3 days in the tomb.
Two witness’s
claim Jesus said that He would destroy this man-made temple and in three days
will build another, not made by man.
Jesus was
referring to himself as the temple, and as we have seen, He was raised from the
dead after three days. Again another
Jesus’ prophecy about himself was fulfilled.
Matthew 12:40 NIV
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Mark 8:31 NIV
He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.
Mark 9:31 NIV
because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise."
because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise."
John
2:20-22 NIV
The
Jews replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you
are going to raise it in three days?"
But the temple he had spoken
of was his body. After he was
raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they
believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.
·
Jesus
is the Messiah, the Son of Man, the Christ, Son of the Blessed One.
Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·
To
remind us that Jesus fulfilled prophecy.
Here are some passages in the Old Testament where Jesus is prophesied
being beaten.
Micah
5:1 NIV
Marshal
your troops, O city of troops, for a siege is laid against us.
They will strike Israel's ruler on the cheek with a rod.
They will strike Israel's ruler on the cheek with a rod.
Isaiah
50:6 NIV
I
offered my back to those who beat me,
my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.
Lamentations
3:30 NIV
Let
him offer his cheek to one who would strike
him, and let him be filled with disgrace.
·
To
remind those who are followers Jesus that will be persecuted and hated as well.
John 15:20 NIV
Remember the words I spoke to you: No servant is greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
Remember the words I spoke to you: No servant is greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.
Luke 21:17 NIV
All men will hate you because of me.
All men will hate you because of me.

His
attributes:

·
Jesus
was going to fulfill His mission before and after the cross.

did not run away from His responsibility to fulfill God’s plan of Salvation. He
was willing to be beaten and afflicted for the sake of God’s children.
3.
Application: How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·
How
am I preparing myself or others to be strong when faced with persecution?
·
In
what areas am I watching Jesus but avoiding following Him because I don’t want
to be involved personally?
·
How
carefully do I examine the evidence before condemning others?
·
In
what ways am I willing to suffer to see that the truth of Christ is proclaimed?
·
When
is it best to remain silent and when is it necessary to speak up?
……………………………………………………………………………….......
My
prayer for you:
I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you
apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you
grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.
Jesus
declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the
abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:
Matthew 6:32-33 Living Bible (TLB)
“So
don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the
heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about
them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them,
and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live
as he wants you to.
John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may
have life and have it abundantly.
Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And
this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his
glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
John 14:26 (NIV)
But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Also,
remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how
we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a
fallen world:
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an
answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
But do this with gentleness and respect,
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped
for every good work.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your
word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
John 8:31-32 (NIV)
