The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 10:

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 10:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Luke 6:42 TNIV
How can you say, 'Friend, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from the other person's eye.

Luke 9:23 TNIV
Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

This week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Read the passage below:

Mark 2:18-22 New International Version (NIV)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting
18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”
19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them. 20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast. 21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. 22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”

 Mark Chapter 2:18-22

1.    Content: What is this passage about?

Jesus answered the question on fasting, predicting His departure and declared the new situation (Where rigid forms of faith are incompatible with the new faith Jesus is teaching) through the parables of the garments and the wineskins.

Who are the people if any?
·        John’s Disciples, The Pharisees, Jesus and His disciples, some People.

When does this take place?
·        After the calling of Levi (Matthew) to be one of Jesus’ disciples.
.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

When Christ comes, all life becomes new; it no longer fits into the old framework of things

Is there a warning, command or promise?

·        One day Jesus will be taken from the disciples.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?

·        We must surrender every part of our lives to Jesus.
·        Fasting is a way we can focus on our relationship with Jesus. By denying ourselves food we can then focus on filling ourselves with God’s Word and devoting time for prayer. Some say it heightens our spiritual awareness, intensifies our communion with God and reminds of our weakness in ourselves and dependence on God for strength.

What are the main points in this passage?

·        John and his disciples and the Pharisees are fasting.
·        Jesus and His disciples were not fasting.
·        Some people questioned Jesus about why He and His disciples were not fasting.
·        Jesus answered them by saying as long as He was still around there was no need for His disciples to fast. But when the time came for Jesus to be taken from them, they will fast.
·        Jesus tells the people a parable about the old garment and the wineskins hoping they will understand His ministry is about a living faith and is incompatible with rigid forms of religion based on ritual.
·        Jesus at this time in His ministry is under close scrutiny.
·        People are trying to understand Jesus and His message.
·        Instead of sincere truth seeking people are trying to trap Jesus accusing Him of going against God’s laws.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?

·        Truth and genuine commitment to God will always be questioned.
·        Religious acts such as fasting are nothing if they are only in outward appearance.
·        Jesus revealed to us a fresh new teaching that calls us to take up our cross daily.
·        Jesus condemns judging others.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?

·        To teach us about how to live in ways that truly represent an authentic relationship with Jesus. This is not based on the practice of ceremonies and rituals, but is based on a personal and close relationship with Jesus that reflects a high level of devotion and intimacy with Him every day.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God/Jesus?

A. His attributes:   Thoughtful and insightful.
B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:  Through Prophecy. Teaching examples. Parables.
C. His emotions:  Passionate about His teaching, Joyful.
D. His views: Jesus’ teaching is superior to the old law in that it emphasizes an authentic and personal relationship with God over a ceremonial and outward display of worship.
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:   He cares about us by teaching us how to live the abundant life. The disciple’s time with Jesus was compared to “a Wedding Feast” a celebration. Our time with Jesus can be just as joyful when our hearts
are connected to His.

3.    Life Application (Personal):

·        Ask yourself, “why am I not joyful even though Jesus has become my Lord and Savior?” (Ask God to show you)
·        In what areas of my life do I need for God to patch up?
·        How has sin affected my life?
·        Am I really praying for a new life in Christ, or do I still want to hold onto my old ways?
·        When will I wholeheartedly make Christ the Lord of every area of my life?
…………………………………………………………………………………….....

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will take care of the rest of the things in our lives:

(Matthew 6:33)   "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well"

In your life, put God first, and He will take care of "all these things."

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 9

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 9:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

1 Corinthians 1:25-31
For the foolishness of God is wiser than man's wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man's strength. Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.  Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord."

1 Corinthians 10:31
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Mark 2:13-17 New International Version (NIV)
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners
13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. 15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
