………………………………………………………………………………………

Here is my layout for    Mark 6:14-16:

1.    Content: What is this passage about?

As a result of the mission of the twelve disciples, Herod and others attempted to explain Jesus’ power.

Who are the people if any?
·         King Herod (Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Perea and Galilee)

What are they doing?   (Scripture links)

Luke 9:7-9 NIV
Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed, because some were saying that John had been raised from the dead,   others that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.  But Herod said, "I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?" And he tried to see him.

Matthew 14:1-3 NIV
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,  and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him."

Where does this take place?
·        Machaerus Fortress on the Dead Sea

When does this take place?
·        After Jesus sends out the 12 disciples to preach, drive out demons and heal the sick.
.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Willful ignorance and deliberate unbelief try to account for Jesus Christ in any way but the right way.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        We should test everything that is told to us about God and salvation with what the scripture really says.

1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 NIV
Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt.  Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.

·        We should be careful not to explain away the miracles that Jesus did as anything else but supernatural power and authority given to Him by God.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Jesus’ name became well known.
·        Herod heard about what Jesus and the disciples were doing.
·        Some People believed Jesus was John The Baptist raised from the dead.  They also thought Jesus was the prophet Elijah. Others thought Jesus was a prophet like the ones from long ago.
·        Because of what he had heard, Herod believed that this man Jesus was John The Baptist raised from the dead.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus’ name to this day continues to be well known.
·        People have heard about all the miraculous things Jesus has done and what the prophets said about Him, yet they still denied Jesus was the Messiah.
·        People try to explain away the miraculous things Jesus has done by twisting the truth or making up lies.
·        People deny Jesus is Lord because they are running away from God and don’t want to have any authority or accountability in their lives.  They believe this to be freedom yet it is actually their imprisonment and death sentence. In other words, they are dead to God and Alive to sin.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To show us how the world wants to explain away the truth about God and the divine nature of Jesus.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God/Jesus?
A. His attributes: Jesus’ was fully divine and fully man. He has two distinct natures. (Jesus' two natures are not "mixed together," nor are they combined into a new God-man nature. They are separate yet act as a unit in the one person of Jesus. This is called the Hypostatic Union.)
B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:  Through others testimony.
C. His emotions:
D. His views:   The Bible is one of the essential keys in our quest to understand the truth about Jesus. (ex. What the prophets said about Him)
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:   He has given us the privilege to serve Him.

……………………………………………………………………………………..
3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        How do I explain to myself and others who Jesus is?
·        Do my actions cause others to ponder the person and work of Jesus?
·        How much time daily do I give to knowing Jesus through His Word?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

1 Thessalonians 2:13 NIV
And we also thank God continually because, when you received the Word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the Word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 6:6-13

Read the passage below:

Mark 6:6-13 New International Version
He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits. These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”
12 They went out and preached that people should repent. 13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.

………………………………………………………………………………………

Here is my layout for Mark 6:6-13:

1.    Content: What is this passage about?

Jesus sends His disciples out two by two to preach , drive out demons, and heal

Who are the people if any?
·        Jesus, the 12 disciples

What are they doing
·        Jesus is teaching and calls the disciples to him to go out and preach, drive out
     demons, and heal..

Where does this take place?
·         In villages in the region around the town of Nazareth.

When does this take place?
·        After Jesus was not honored in His own town.
.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Jesus equips and instructs those He sends out to minister in His name

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        As followers of Jesus we are commanded to go out and tell others the “Good
     News.”

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        When we are called by God to ministry we need to believe that God will equip us to
      do the job.
·        We need to act on God’s calling for us to serve Him.

Reflect on these passages about who we are in Christ and what we are called to do:

Ephesians 2:10 NIV
For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

2 Corinthians 5:19-20 NIV
that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.  We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.
We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God.

Ephesians 4:11-13 NIV
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith
and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Jesus sends out the 12 disciples two by two to preach, drive out demons and heal
      the sick.
·        Jesus gave them authority over evil spirits.
·        Jesus gives His disciples instructions for their mission & ministry.
·        The disciples went out and preached repentance.
·        The disciples also drove out many demons and healed the sick.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        We will be equipped to do God’s work.
·        Followers of Jesus are called to go out and make disciples.

The Great Commission tells us to go out and make disciples:

Matthew 28:18-20 NIV
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  and teaching them
to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us that we too must obey God’s command to go out and make disciples.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God/Jesus?
A. His attributes:  Teacher, Merciful, Sovereign (In total control)
B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:  Through His teaching, through His followers spreading the “Good News”.
C. His emotions: Determined to get the Disciples focused on their mission
D. His views:  We need to share the Gospel with others and help them become devoted followers and disciples of Jesus.
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:   We have benefited from God’s Great Commission.  Others have shared the “Good News” with us and  have helped us become fully devoted followers and disciples as well.

……………………………………………………………………………………..
3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        What instructions has the Lord given me?
·        Am I trusting Him today that His provision is adequate?
·        How do I react to those who do not listen to me?
……………………………………………………………………………….......
