Fear VS Hope

What is your greatest fear? For some it is physical death. For others it is the death of their soul or spiritual death. A physical death is the separation of the soul from the body. Spiritual death, is the separation of the soul from God. According to the Bible, people who are separated from God are spiritually dead. Sin Separates us all from God.

The Bible points out how sin kills the soul:

For all people are mine to judge—both parents and children alike. And this is my rule: The person who sins is the one who will die. (Ezekiel 18:4 NLT)

The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins. Righteous people will be rewarded for their own righteous behavior, and wicked people will be punished for their own wickedness.(Ezekiel 18:20 NLT)

The wages of sin is death (Romans 6;23)

but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. (James 1:14-15 NIV)

The Bibles tells us that sin separates us from God and only Jesus can restore that broken relationship.

If a person is dead set about rejecting the God of the Bible they probably couldn't care less about eternity or at least life after death the way God designed.  According to God, a person is either with Him or separated from Him for all eternity depending on their relationship with His Son Jesus. Followers of Jesus know that physical death is not the end of all things. In fact, it is the beginning of their eternal existence outside their perishable body. They know they will receive a new imperishable body.

There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. ( 1 Corinthians 15: 40-44)

 Jesus reassures us about eternity:

Jesus says:

“I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life. (John 5:24)

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. (John 11:25)

My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. (John 14:2-3)

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13 NIV)

There is a difference when a believer faces death as opposed to a person who does not have an assurance of eternity according to their god. In Buddhism, philosophy and spiritual enlightenment might be able to save them. In Islam, prayers and good works can determine their eternity. In Hinduism, they might be saved by worshipping other god's. I wouldn't say these religions have an actual guarantee of salvation. Christianity does.

Biblical Christianity tells us that Jesus is the one whose sacrifice makes salvation possible and if you believe Jesus is your Lord and Savior your salvation is secure and you are bound for heaven. Jesus' work of salvation is based on God's love and Grace, not our own good works. Jesus restores a relationship with God that is broken by our sin.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (john 3:16-17 NIV)

“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2:24)

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)

One thing that helps us with our fear is assurance. Knowing that Jesus died for sinners and that there is no condemnation for those who believe in Jesus as lord and Savior is a way to help overcome the fear of death.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.(Romans 5:8)

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,(Romans 8:1)

God tells his people through the prophet Isaiah not to fear. He is not telling them they may not have to navigate through difficult life experiences, but He is promising to be present in those burdensome circumstances of life.

But now, this is what the Lord says—
    he who created you, Jacob,
    he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters,
    I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
    you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.

For I am the Lord your God,
    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
(Isaiah 43:1-3)

Having Faith and trust in God can help overcome our greatest fear.

Sometimes the unknown and the worries of  what will happen tomorrow can consume us. But Jesus speaks to that too in a couple of ways that can reassure us of His concern for our well being.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29)

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?  Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[? (Matthew 6:25-27)

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:33-34)

So how can we know what the bible says is true?

There are many prophecies in the bible that have been fulfilled. Jesus fulfilled at least 300 prophecies in His earthly ministry.

Nature reveals the work and Glory of God

The function of everything living animal, plant, Human. gravity, proves there has to be a designer.

The amount of people whose lives have changed through a relationship with Jesus is astounding!

The Bible tells us how the universe, the stars, the earth, the sun and earth were created.

The Bible tells us why God created us.

The Bible tells us that God loves us and continues the process of saving people from the consequences of sin.

God has a personal relationship and communicates to His people His truth, wisdom and His love

The Holy Spirit teaches us, guides us, comforts us, and supernaturally changes us in the way God desires.

There were many witnesses to Jesus' resurrection.

Because of Jesus we can have everlasting life.

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[a] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”  (Revelation 21:2-5 NIV)

Challenge:

Ask God to prove He is the one true God. He will!

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right
hand. (Isaiah 41:10 NLT)

Your faith and trust in God will help you have confidence, assurance and hope for your life now and for all eternity. You can know God will be present in your daily life and a force of comfort and peace even in the midst of things you fear the most.

Proverbs 3:5-6 A Good Reason To Trust God With All Your Heart And Not Lean On Your Own Understanding

Proverbs 3:5-6 New International Version

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

If you are looking for some great advice, I highly recommend all of chapter 3 from Proverbs. I think verses 5 & 6 became my favorite bible passage because it seemed to be the only one, I could memorize other than the verses, pray continually, and Jesus wept. I prefer the version that says submit to Him instead of acknowledge Him, because I feel it is a stronger way of saying that I believe God is the Lord and Authority over my life.

Maybe God wanted me to focus on this one passage because my approach to life for the most part was through my own understanding. I used to be a person who mocked and rejected God and could only see the world through my own limited perspective. I know now that navigating this life without Jesus as my cornerstone would be like standing on sinking sand not solid ground.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds me of the importance of trusting God and submitting to Him all the areas of my life that I desire to control. In any situation my first inclination is to try to control my circumstances and act without counsel from God.  But I find I have a great deal more wisdom, discernment, and peace when I inquire of the Lord. When it comes to making decisions whether big or small, God promises to give generously the wisdom we need if we just ask and don’t doubt that He will.  I am always grateful for His perspective and answers to my requests. God sees all, He knows all and is sovereign over all things. Therefore, it makes sense that I should let Him direct my path.

A good understanding of this principle of trusting the Lord with all my heart starts with Isaiah 55:8-9 where God says: For my thoughts are not your thoughts neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Embracing this truth about the mind of God helps me to acknowledge and submit to His authority. Acknowledging God’s authority and submitting to His authority are not the same thing. It took me a while to learn this, and I still resist submission.

Trusting the Lord takes a great deal of humility in that I must admit I cannot outthink God, nor should I expect to bear any fruit for His kingdom without His help. Jesus said: If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. When I look at my wife Deena’s life for example, I see a lot of evidence of a fruitful relationship with Jesus and that evidence encourages me to do the same.   Plus, I have lived a lifetime worth of poor decisions, that prove to me that leaning on my own understanding and living disconnected from Jesus is a bad idea.

My history proves that God can redeem and restore anyone.

I grew up in a Jewish family that never had a good thing to say about Jesus. In college I tried to find truth in anything but Christianity, like Buddhism, Existentialism, Nihilism, Humanism and many other isms.  My life was full of Spiritual dead ends. Many years later after getting married, my wife Deena challenged me to read the Bible, and I told her I would when I was good and ready. Because God supernaturally softened my heart the time came for me to crack open the Bible. I said to God, I will believe if you show me Jesus is the Messiah for the Jews. I wanted the proof. So, in a way I never could imagine, God made the scripture jump right out of the page showing me in the Old Testament, through the prophets, how Jesus is the Messiah for the Jews. By the end of the Old Testament, I became a believer in Jesus Christ.

Then decided to read the New Testament just to see how the story ends.

Our world and culture flood us with confusing messages, even lies like “my truth and your truth are equally valid”. That is why we need to lean on God’s Word to tell us exactly how we should live.

God gave me understanding when it comes to my salvation. It is God who establishes truth. That really matters because the truth is, only Jesus can save us. Seeking God’s truth is the only thing that truly makes sense in this life.

Real submission and trust in the Lord awaken in me, when I love God more than I love myself. When I embrace His plans and desires for my life. When I am willing to take the road, the Lord has directed, instead of my own preferences.

I want to do this so that my life and my walk with God will be like a tight harmony in the midst of a beautiful song of praise.  May it be so!

Trust In The Lord

  Jesus told His disciples,

"And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed,
for this must take place, but the end is not yet." (Matthew 24:6)

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. (Matthew 24:12-13)

Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
(John 16:32-33)

In the above passages cases Jesus is telling His disciples what is to come and yet assures them of a greater comforting truth. Jesus is: Lord, Savior, “Wonderful,” “Counselor,” “The Mighty God,” “The Everlasting Father,” “The Prince of Peace.”

For unto us a child is born; unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder. These will be his royal titles: “Wonderful,” “Counselor,” “The Mighty God,” “The Everlasting Father,” “The Prince of Peace.”  His ever-expanding, peaceful government will never end. He will rule with perfect fairness and justice from the throne of his father David. He will bring true justice and peace to all the nations of the world. This is going to happen because the Lord of heaven’s armies has dedicated himself to do it! (Isaiah 9:6-7)

Jesus does not delight in the tragedies we face, He knows in advance that they will happen.
God's perfect plan sometimes uses the consequences of sin in people and in nature to draw people to Himself. So, when there is a storm, the only one we can truly trust is the Lord.

The Bible reminds us:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

My prayer is that fear will not overcome us, that we will stand firm in our faith, and that we will trust God and lean not on our own understanding.

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” – Isaiah 12:2 ESV

He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress where I will never be shaken. (Pslam 62:2 NLT)

Blessings, peace and comfort to you all................Dave

Praying God's Promises

 Praying God's Promises

Lately, I have found myself praying the exact same prayers to God. Not that there is anything wrong with that. But sometimes it seems like I'm just going through the motions instead of sharing my real heartfelt concerns, praises and other issues that I should be dealing with at the moment.

Why do get stuck on this prayer routine? I suppose I have become comfortable with the prayer script I have written for myself. My tendency is to seek comfort in praying for others as opposed to looking at some of my important personal issues that really need to be addressed. For these kind of prayers I need to find ways I can go deeper with God.

To get myself out of my comfy prayer routine, I can pray through God's Word, His promises, and through His perspective. Sometimes I will even pray through the Lord's Prayer and discover new and deeper ways to communicate my heart to Him.

I'm thankful that prayer can become more than just something I feel I need to do but actually become something I want to do. When I truly desire to pray, I realize how truly powerful and effective prayer can be.

A believers prayer can be powerful and effective:

James 5:16 NIV

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

There are things happening in everyone's life that just break my heart to see. It has become my desire that God would intervene into all those lives and circumstances. Yet, I  also know that God answers prayer by not answering prayer the way we would like Him to. God's perspective on things is greater in scope and in purpose in more ways than we can ever know.

This passage reveals to me how difficult it can be to fully understand the ways of God:

Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

But even with God's ways and thoughts being higher than our own, we can still find out how God wants us to live and work with kingdom purpose. We can get wisdom along with the desire to live set apart to Him. Through prayer we can ask for God to reveal what He wants us to do and how He wants us to do it. When it comes to wisdom, God gives generously.

Matthew 7:7-8 ESV

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

Matthew 1:5 ESV

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

So, it is important that when I pray I am willing to rely on God's wisdom, discernment, perspective and revelation. My faith and trust in God must come into play as I act on prayer with faith, trust, and the leading of the Holy Spirit. Even If God does not answer my prayer, I still believe it is for a His greater purpose.

Romans 8:28 NIV

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Praying the scripture and through God's promises can direct me to know what God desires for my life.

But my prayers alone are not the catalyst to move God to answer prayer. God may actually have something better planned for me in mind. God may have a different perspective than I do and I may not be fully aware of that perspective when I pray. I also have to come to terms with those times God wants me to experience the consequences from the choices I make. This is God's way to help me realize that my sinful choices are bad for me. This is God's way of refining me.

There have also been many times when when my circumstances have been so out of my control that my only choice is to fully rely on Him. And this is another aspect of God's desire for my life. Fully relying on God in a sinful and broken world is very beneficial.

The truth is this; God wants me to turn to Him and wait on Him because He wants me to fully trust Him with my life. He wants me to worship Him while I wait. So when I pray, I need to trust God and have faith He will answer in whatever way He desires; in His perfect way and in His perfect timing.

God is relational and personal and desires to be included in my life. So when I wait for His answers it shows I want to hear from God and let Him direct my path. If I only brought God into my circumstances when I needed Him that would not make for a good 2 way relationship. God desires fellowship but also desires to be loved by me with all my heart, soul, mind and strength.

This verse from proverbs reminds me that God desires relationship with me:

Proverbs 8:17 ESV

I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me.

Jesus reminds us:

Mark 12:30 NIV
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

So when those times of waiting and difficult experiences begin to get the best of me, God is at work helping me realize that I need to shed my old ways of thinking and living. This can be a painful but ultimately a way to be more like Jesus in character and love. God does not leave me hanging; He offers His peace and rest in the midst of my spiritual growth.

Jesus tells us that we can come to Him and  share our burdens and concerns. And when we do, we can experience real rest. Having Jesus to share our heart with is very comforting and will help to release some of the tension built up from having anxiety over our circumstances and those times we are trying to figure things out for ourselves. Sharing our heart with God is one of the best ways to relieve some of the burdens we carry.

This passage is a great reminder for me:

Matthew 11:28-30 New International Version

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

So, even when our prayers and concerns are not resolved in our timeline of expectation or hope,  we are still in the presence of Jesus and can find that rest. I know that the Holy Spirit plays a role in our comfort. He is our helper and the Spirit of Truth:

John 14:16 ESV

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

John 16:13 ESV

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

The scripture I like to pray reminds me about God's truth and how much He loves me.  The Holy Spirit plays the integral supernatural role in bringing all this truth to the forefront of my mind and heart, so when I pray I know God is in the midst of it.

God's truth, God's promises, and the Holy Spirit help me understand that God is in control  and I can trust His plan. My prayers can enlighten me about how much I desire God's plan or in contrast, how much I desire things to be the way I want them to be. If I want to experience God's plan with peace I need to surrender my will and concerns to God.  Otherwise, waiting on God to direct my path can become a real struggle.

God's plan is far better than ours so we should not lean on our own understanding but submit to God so we can follow His better path for our lives.

Ultimately as we desire peace in the midst of our concerns. our prayers draw us closer to God and therefore bring us closer to the peace and rest He offers.

Through prayer we can receive God's peace and His rest.

Rest is important in times when our perspective is limited. It is in the state of rest that we can experience a different kind of peace. This peace that is supernatural in nature can help us to grab hold of an eternal perspective concerning living life in a fallen world. Therefore, our understanding and desire can develop  to a point where we pray for the good purpose God has for His people. We can also pray for those caught up in the world's lies and confusion, and for those who are either drawn away from God, or who outright reject Him.

One thing about God's good purpose is that it may not be fully understood at the moment, but in reflection can be seen as the perfect answer to a complex and even impossible situation. The Apostle Paul reminds us that in every situation we should present our requests to God. The result is, God has the power to transform the heart and the mind and bring us a peace even in the midst of turmoil.

This passage shows us prayer can lead to a state of peace that is nothing like the world can give:

Philippians 4:6-7 New International Version

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

So when I am coming to God in prayer, I can take the promises He has revealed to me and incorporate them into my circumstances. For example, I believe this passage from Proverbs speaks directly to me. So even when I don't understand the unanswered whys of life, this passage can help me share my heart with God.

 Proverbs 3:5-6 New International Version

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

I may phrase it this way:

Father, I don't understand why things are happening this way but I know in my heart it is for Your good purpose. Lord help me trust you and not in my own perspective and show me what I need to do in this moment in order to surrender to Your will. Father show me how I can follow You and give honor and glory to Your Name.

This method of praying through scripture jolts me out of my prayer routine and into a deeper and more intimate experience with God.

How to Minister to the Spiritually Dead
Connecting to a Knowable God
(ways to connect people to a knowable God)

What is the difference between physical and spiritual death?

·       Physical death is when the body ceases to function, but spiritual death is eternal separation from God, because our spirits are immortal. Therefore, even when a person is physically dead his or her spirit is still very much alive.

·        Physical death is the separation of the soul from the body, and spiritual death is the separation of the soul from God

·       The life of our flesh is temporary, and the life of our soul is eternal. Your soul is the part of you that consists of your mind, character, thoughts, and feelings.

So, what qualifies someone as spiritually dead?

·       To be spiritually dead is to be separated from God due to sin. Sin, if not forgiven, leads to spiritual death after one dies physically. The only way to escape that death is to come to Jesus through faith, drawn to Him by the Holy Spirit. Faith in Christ leads to spiritual life, and ultimately to eternal life.·

1    Living like the rest of the world - A desire for the world's acceptance, embracing immoral lifestyles and a heart filled with godless motives.

2.    The spiritually dead follow "the ruler of the kingdom of the air." This ruler is Satan.

·        Satan and his demons work within the hearts and minds of the spiritually dead. His kingdom is evil and very real.

3.    The spiritually dead are enslaved to "gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature"

How The spiritually dead are distinguishable from the spiritually alive:

1. Live according to the world, not to Christ.

2. Live according to Satan, not to Christ.

3. Live according to the flesh, not to Christ.

Characteristics of the spiritually alive:

They earnestly seek fellowship with God as well as with people who love Him.

They are those who "love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. They love their neighbor as themselves" (Mark 12:30-31).

They are known for their love for one another (John 13:35), and wouldn't hesitate "to lay down their lives for friends" (John 15:13).

They are highly sensitive to sin.

They strive to "walk in the Light as He Himself is the Light" (1 John 5:7).

They "confess their sins" (1 John 1:9).

They know God’s desire is for them to be holy (1 Peter 1:15-16) which means being devoted or dedicated to God. They have been set aside and set apart for His special use and purpose and desire to not engage in sin or be influenced by the world to overlook sin.

They're known for their obedience to the Word of God (1 John 2:3)

They live in expectation for Christ's return.

The Christian who is spiritually alive has a drastically different way of relating to God through   personal relationship, fellowship and Worship. They are no longer a slave to sin (Romans 6:1417-18).

Not only are they acutely aware of sin, as we've seen, but sin becomes less of a pattern in their lives. Instead, they demonstrate a daily pattern of living by the Spirit and not the flesh.

They allow the promptings of the Holy Spirit to lead them. 1 John 4:13 tells us: "By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us His Spirit."

Their lives demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit's influencing in them in what they say and what they do (Colossians 3:17)

The spiritually alive person is able to discern spiritual truth from error.

They're different, they're unique and easily distinguishable from others steeped in the world. They are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God who praise God and are who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. They are now considered the people of God who have received His mercy.  Read (1 Peter 2:9-10).

How to live set apart to God: (Scripture)

Romans 12:2

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect"

1 John 2:15
"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him"

James 4:4

Do not be friends with the world: "You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God"

Colossians 2:8
"See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ"

Matthew 6:24
Recognize that, "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other"

Bad News VS Good News: (Scripture)

Romans 5:12 New International Version (The Bad News)

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned

Ephesians 2:1-3 New International Version (The Bad News)

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sinsin which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.

Ephesians 2:4-5 New International Version (The Good News)

But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Ephesians 2:8-10 New International Version (The Good News)

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Ephesians 2:13-18 New International Version (The Good News)

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

Romans 6:23 New International Version (The Good News)

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

Romans 5:8 New International Version (The Good News)

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Colossians 2:13 New International Version (The Good News)

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,

Romans 8:1-3 New International Version (The Good News)

Life Through the Spirit

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,

John 3:3 New International Version (The Good News)

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.

God is Knowable:

While God can never be totally understood, he can be known, God is personal, has definite characteristics, and has personally revealed himself so that he can be truly known.

God makes Himself known in two ways, the first of which is His magnificent creation.  God can be seen in every creature that He has formed and through the way he preserves and governs the universe.

Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

Romans 1:20

"For the invisible things of God from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead:  so that they are without excuse."

There is also the truth of God’s Word fulfilled in Jesus Christ. This revelation of God points us to Jesus, and through the work of the Holy Spirit can lead has the power to leads us to salvation.

Jesus said:

 John 17:3 New International Version

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

The Scriptures prove that God is knowable.  And yet the knowledge of God that the believer has its limitations.

It is necessary for salvation that God is knowable:

God has attributes which set Him apart and distinguish Him from all others. These attributes are referred to as the incommunicable,

The term incommunicable does not mean we can have no knowledge or understanding of these attributes. Rather it means they are impossible to impart to another; or these attributes are not shared with any created being. It is these incommunicable attributes which set God apart from all other beings, visible and invisible.

The incommunicable attributes of God which are easily recognized in the scripture as belonging to God alone.

·         Omnipotence: All Power. Almighty power; unlimited or infinite power.

·         Omniscience: All Knowledge - All Wisdom - All Understanding

·         Omnipresence: Always Present Everywhere. The state of being everywhere

                                  at once.

·         Eternal: The quality of being which expresses absolute perfection in

duration and character; being without beginning and without

                      ending.

·         Immutable: The quality of being incapable of mutating or changing.

The knowable attributes of God that scripture reveals to us:

·         God Is Infinite – He is Self-Existing, Without Origin

"And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together." - Colossians 1:17

“Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure”

            – Psalm 147:5

·         God Is Immutable – He Never Changes:

“I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not

          destroyed.” Malachi 3:6

·         God Is Self-Sufficient – He Has No Needs:

“For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life

            in himself.”  – John 5:26

·         God is Omnipotent – He Is All Powerful:

“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of

            his mouth.” – Psalm 33:6

·         Scripture tells us that God is strong and mighty (Psalm 24:8).

·         Nothing is too hard for Him to accomplish (Genesis 18:14; Jeremiah 32:17, 27; Luke 1:37).

·         Often God is called "Almighty," describing Him as the One who possesses all power and authority (2 Corinthians 6:18Revelation 1:8).

·         And is "able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine" (Ephesians 3:20).”

·         God Is Omniscient – He Is All-Knowing

“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am

God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from

ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all

               that I  please” - Isaiah 46:9-10

·         God Is Omnipresent – He Is Always Everywhere

“Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend

to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.if I take

the  wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Your hand

will lead me, And  Your right hand will lay hold of me.” Psalm 139:7-10

“‘Am I a God at hand,’ declares the Lord, ‘and not a God afar off? Can a man hide

himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?’ declares the Lord. ‘Do I not fill

heaven and earth?’  declares the Lord” - Jeremiah 23:23-24

To be omnipresent is to be in all places, at all times. Yet, it is important to understand

that for God “to be” in a place is not the same way we are in a place. “God’s being is

all together different from physical matter,”

·         God Is Wise – He Is Full of Perfect, Unchanging Wisdom

“Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!

How unsearchable are  His judgments and unfathomable His ways!”

              – Romans 11:33

·         God Is Faithful – He Is Infinitely, Unchangingly True

"Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping

his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his

            commands." - Deut 7:9

“[I]f we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.” 2 Timothy                2:13

·         God Is Good – He Is Infinitely, Unchangingly Kind and Full of Good Will

“O, taste and see that the Lord is good” – Psalm 34:8

·         God Is Just – He Is Infinitely, Unchangeably Right and Perfect in All He Does

"The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness

and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He.” – Duet 32:4

·         God Is Merciful – He is Infinitely, Unchangeably Compassionate and Kind

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I

have compassion.” So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man

who runs, but on God who has mercy." Romans 9:15-16

·         God Is Gracious – God Is Infinitely Inclined to Spare the Guilty

"The LORD is gracious and merciful; Slow to anger and great in lovingkindness."

             –  Psalm 145:8

·         God Is Loving – God Infinitely, Unchangingly Loves Us

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been

born of God and knows God.  Anyone who does not love does not know God,

because God is love.” – 1 John 4:7-8

·         God Is Holy – He is Infinitely, Unchangingly Perfect

“Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord Almighty” – Revelation 4:8

·         God Is Glorious – He is Infinitely Beautiful and Great

“His radiance is like the sunlight; He has rays flashing from His hand, And there is the

hiding of His power.” - Habakkuk 3:4

The glory of God is of course, inseparable from his other attributes, so God is eternally, infinitely, unchangingly glorious. His radiance and beauty emanate from all that his is and all that he does

Isaiah 43:7 says that man was created by God for his glory. So, our whole existence and purpose is to glorify him, as we are created in his image and do the good work he has prepared for us to do. Inevitably, man will try to find glory in other things, or to try and make himself an object of glory. And when those things fail to bring us satisfaction, we must decide to humble ourselves and turn our gaze back to the only one who is worthy of glory.

1 John 4:8 New International Version

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 1:5 New International Version

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

John 4:24 New International Version

God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Other ways that display the Glory of God and help us know who He is:

The Heavens:

Psalm 19:1-4a: The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.”

Psalm 97:6 New International Version

The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all peoples see his glory.

The Prophets and His Son:

Hebrews 1:1-3a: “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.”

Jesus:

John 1:14,18: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth…no one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.”

We can know that the Lord is good:

Psalm 34:8 New International Version

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him

We can know about the heart of God:

Jeremiah 9:23-24 New International Version

This is what the Lord says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, 24 but let the one who boasts boast about this:  that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the Lord.

We can find the Lord if we have the desire to:

Deuteronomy 4:29 New International Version

But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Jesus is essential for eternal life:

John 17:3 New International Version

Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

How God is revealed:

General revelation:

Also known as Universal revelation, general revelation deals with how God can be understood through his creation. More specifically, this can be manifest in physical nature, human nature, and history. General revelation does not impart truths that are necessary for salvation

Physical nature:

The book of Psalms says that, "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork" (Psalm 19:1).

Human nature:

Because humans are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27), something about God can be learned from the study of human nature. Most evident is the moral and spiritual qualities found within humankind that reflect the character of God. Paul says that even the law is written on the hearts of people who do not have the specially revealed law (Romans 2:11-16).

History: (His – Story)

The Bible clearly indicates in numerous places that God is moving the course of history and is controlling the destinies of nations (Job 12:23; Psalm 47:7-8, 66:7; Isaiah 10:5-13; Daniel 2:21; Acts 17:26).

Special revelation:

Special revelation is distinguished from general revelation in that it is direct revelation from God. Examples include God's direct speech to various people in the bible for example the prophets and His Son Jesus (Hebrews 1:1-2), Spoke from God and carried along by the Holy Spirit ( 2 Peter 1:20-21)

Such revelation is sufficient to communicate the gospel, unlike general revelation, and thus salvation is possible only through special revelation.
