John 15:18-27 New International Version (NIV)

The World Hates the Disciples

¹⁸ “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. ¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. ²⁰ Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’^[a] If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. ²¹ They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. ²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.²³ Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’^[b]

The Work of the Holy Spirit

²⁶ “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me. ²⁷ And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

The World’s Hatred

¹⁸ “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. ¹⁹ The world would love you as one of its own if you belonged to it, but you are no longer part of the world. I chose you to come out of the world, so it hates you. ²⁰ Do you remember what I told you? ‘A slave is not greater than the master.’ Since they persecuted me, naturally they will persecute you. And if they had listened to me, they would listen to you.²¹ They will do all this to you because of me, for they have rejected the one who sent me. ²² They would not be guilty if I had not come and spoken to them. But now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ Anyone who hates me also hates my Father. ²⁴ If I hadn’t done such miraculous signs among them that no one else could do, they would not be guilty. But as it is, they have seen everything I did, yet they still hate me and my Father. ²⁵ This fulfills what is written in their Scriptures^[a]: ‘They hated me without cause.’

²⁶ “But I will send you the Advocate^[b]—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me. ²⁷ And you must also testify about me because you have been with me from the beginning of my ministry.

Content: What is this passage about?

·        Jesus teaches His disciples about the “world”.

·        Jesus teaches about the “world” pertaining to persecution, rejection, and hatred for Him and all His disciples.

·        Jesus tells His disciples He will be sending the Holy Spirit.

Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        Jesus teaches the disciples about the “world”.

The World:

The “world” Jesus is referring to are unbelievers who reject God and prefer to live on their own terms. These people do are not concerned about the detrimental effects of their decision to live in opposition to God, His principles and truth. In fact, many of these “worldly” people reject and hate Jesus and those who follow Him. The sinful and unrepentant have no need for a Savior nor do they want to be rescued from their sin. They hate the idea of surrender, obedience and love for God.  

Jesus teaches that those who reject Him are under the influence of the Satan, the god of this world:

The phrase “god of this world” (or “god of this age”) indicates that Satan is the major influence on the ideals, opinions, goals, hopes and views of the majority of people. His influence also encompasses the world’s philosophies, education, and commerce. The thoughts, ideas, speculations and false religions of the world are under his control and have sprung from his lies and deceptions.

According to the Bible, Satan is also called the "prince of the power of the air" in Ephesians 2:2. He is the "ruler of this world" in John 12:31. These titles and many more signify Satan’s capabilities. To say, for example, that Satan is the "prince of the power of the air" is to signify that in some way he rules over the world and the people in it.

So, when the Bible says that Satan is the "god of this world," it is not saying that he has ultimate authority. It is conveying the idea that Satan rules over the unbelieving world in a specific way.

In 2 Corinthians 4:4, the unbeliever follows Satan's agenda: "The god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ."

Satan's scheme includes promoting false philosophies in the world—philosophies that blind the unbeliever to the truth of the Gospel. Satan’s philosophies are the fortresses in which people are imprisoned, and they must be set free by Christ.

An example of one such false philosophy is the belief that man can earn God's favor by a certain act or acts. In almost every false religion, meriting God’s favor or earning eternal life is a predominant theme. Earning salvation by works, however, is contrary to biblical revelation.

Man cannot work to earn God's favor; eternal life is a free gift:

Ephesians 2:8-9 New International Version (NIV)

⁸ For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— ⁹ not by works, so that no one can boast

And that free gift is available through Jesus Christ and Him alone.

You may ask why mankind does not simply receive the free gift of salvation. The answer is that Satan—the god of this world—has tempted mankind to follow his pride instead. Satan sets the agenda, the unbelieving world follows, and mankind continues to be deceived. It is no wonder that Scripture calls Satan a liar:

John 8:44 New International Version (NIV)

⁴⁴ You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Based on the reasons stated above, it is so important for believers to shed light on Satan’s darkness.  People need to know Jesus’ light will overcome their darkness and fear. He is the light and hope to the unbelieving world:

John 8:12 New International Version (NIV)

 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 9:5New International Version (NIV)

While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

John 12:46 New International Version (NIV)

I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

John 12:35 New International Version (NIV)

Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going.

²² But God has helped me to this very day; so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen— ²³ that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.”

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ² He was with God in the beginning. ³ Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.⁴ In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. ⁵ The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

⁶ There was a man sent from God whose name was John. ⁷ He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. ⁸ He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

⁹ The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.¹⁰ He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. ¹¹ He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. ¹² Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—¹³ children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

¹⁴ The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

·        Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit who will testify about Him.

·        Jesus calls on His disciples to testify about Him.

The special attributes of the Holy Spirit:

·        He convicts us of sin (John 16:8).

·        He permanently indwells us (John 14:16-17).

·        He seals us (Eph. 1:13).

·        He teaches us (John 14:26).

·        He guides us into all truth (John 16:13).

·        He reminds us about all Jesus has said (John 14:26).

·        He bears fruit through us (Gal. 5:22-23).

·        He comforts us (John 16:7).

·        He equips us with spiritual gifts (1 Cor. 12:4-7).

·        He fills us (Eph. 5:18).

·        He empowers us (Acts 1:8).

Although the Spirit comes to indwell us immediately upon salvation, His work within us takes a lifetime. His job is to enable us to do everything God desires and to transform us into the people He wants us to be. Since we now have a constant Helper reminding us who we are in Christ and equipping us for each day’s challenges, we never have to struggle through life in our own strength. This doesn’t mean we’ll never have difficulties, conflicts, or misunderstandings; but through them all, He guards our way and gives us His wisdom. And when we sin, He immediately convicts us so we can confess and receive forgiveness 

What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit?

Although we’re sealed and indwelt by Him when we’re saved, this is not the same as being filled. To be filled with the Spirit means we have surrendered our lives to Him, acknowledging that He owns us and has the right to lead us. When we are fully yielded and walking in obedience to His will, then He has full control and fills us with Himself.

We are called to testify about Jesus:

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

¹⁵ But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, ¹⁶ keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Application: How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

·        Understand that God is telling believers what to expect from the “world” and how we can act accordingly.  

·        Being hated for your identity in Christ is something that you should expect from an unbelieving world ruled by Satan, the enemy of God and His people.

·        Jesus tells us that in this world we will have trouble but to take heart, He has overcome the world:

John 16:33 New International Version (NIV)

 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

·        We should remember that believers are called to love. They should not hate their enemies (the world) but to pray for them.

Matthew 5:43-48 Living Bible (TLB)

⁴³ “There is a saying, ‘Love your friends and hate your enemies.’ ⁴⁴ But I say: Love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! ⁴⁵ In that way you will be acting as true sons of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust too. ⁴⁶ If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even scoundrels do that much. ⁴⁷ If you are friendly only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even the heathen do that. ⁴⁸ But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.

·        Believers need to be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to receive Godly perspective, discernment, and a Christ-like loving heart, all by which bring about decisions and actions that bring glory to God.    

·        Share the hope you have in Christ.

“Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

·        To tell the world that Jesus is the Messiah for the Jews and Gentiles

·        The events were recorded so that we might believe and have eternal life

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

³⁰ Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. ³¹ But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Questions to ponder:

·        How is God calling you to live in these present times where Christians are hated and persecuted?

·        Are you willing to have your identity in Christ even though you may be hated and persecuted?

·        What are you doing to share the love of Christ to those around you?

·        What are the things you are doing that helps you be filled with the Holy Spirit every day?

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. ² He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes^[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. ³ You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. ⁴ Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

⁵ “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. ⁶ If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.⁷ If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. ⁸ This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

Jesus, the True Vine

15 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. ² He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more. ³ You have already been pruned and purified by the message I have given you.⁴ Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

⁵ “Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. ⁶ Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. ⁷ But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! ⁸ When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. ⁹ “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Content: What is this passage about?

·        Jesus teaches His disciples about the vine and branches.

·        Jesus teaches the disciples about the way to bear fruit for God’s kingdom.

·        Jesus teaches His disciples about love.

Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        Jesus declares to His disciples that He is the true vine.

·        Jesus explains that as the “vine”, He would be the one to nourish and sustain His disciples, “the branches”, so they can bear fruit.

·        Jesus explains that those branches that do not bear fruit will be cut off by God/the Gardner.

·        Jesus tells the disciples that unless they remain in Him they will bear no fruit for God’s kingdom. The spiritual truth for believers is that apart from Jesus no one can bear fruit. Everything work that is done for God’s kingdom has to be connected to Christ and His will, measure and prompting. That is why in the life of a follower of Jesus, the Holy Spirit teaches, gifts, leads, equips and counsels every true work that a believer does.

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 New Living Translation (NLT)

⁴ There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. ⁵ There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. ⁶ God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

⁷ A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. ⁸ To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. ⁹ The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. ¹⁰ He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. ²² But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³ gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

·        Jesus declares that every true work connected to the vine will produce much fruit and will give great glory to God.

·        These good God-centered works also prove that those who produce them are Jesus’ disciples.

·        When Jesus teaches about love He makes it clear that His followers must remain in His love. We remain in in His love by following all that Jesus and the Father have taught us and have commanded us to do. Jesus also declares that His example of obedience and love for the Father is the model for all His disciples to follow.

We love God by following His commands:

In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,

2 John 6 New International Version (NIV)

And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

A good reminder about obedience and building upon a solid foundation in Christ:

Luke 6:46-49 New Living Translation (NLT)

Building on a Solid Foundation

⁴⁶ “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? ⁴⁷ I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. ⁴⁸ It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. ⁴⁹ But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”

·        Jesus tells His disciples everything they need to know so that they would experience joy.

·        Jesus commands His disciples to love one another as He has loved them.

·        Jesus teaches that the greatest form of love is sacrificial love. Jesus says this:

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

·        Jesus modeled sacrificial love with His work on the Cross.

·        We too can model this kind of love with our love and attitudes toward others.  Part of Jesus’ teaching the parable of the sheep and goats:

Matthew 25:40 New International Version (NIV)

 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

We need to care for others even at the expense of our own interests:

Philippians 2:3-4 New International Version (NIV)

³ Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, ⁴ not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

·        Jesus explains to the disciples that they are His friends if they do what He commands.

·        Jesus explains that He chose His disciples, they did not choose Him.

Jesus chose His disciples to go and produce lasting fruit. Jesus also commissioned His disciples to go and share the gospel:

The New Testament speaks about being equipped to bear fruit for God’s kingdom:

Colossians 1:9-12New Living Translation (NLT)

⁹ So we have not stopped praying for you since we first heard about you. We ask God to give you complete knowledge of his will and to give you spiritual wisdom and understanding. ¹⁰ Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.

¹¹ We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, ¹² always thanking the Father. He has enabled you to share in the inheritance that belongs to his people, who live in the light.

Believers should take to heart that God’s Word equips them to carry out all God has called them to do:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 New International Version (NIV)

¹⁶ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, ¹⁷ so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

We need to be doers of the Word:

James 1:22-25 New Living Translation (NLT)

²² But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. ²³ For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. ²⁴ You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. ²⁵ But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

Believers connected to Jesus are doing the good work God has called them to do:

Ephesians 2:10 New International Version (NIV)

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Application: How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

·        Be a doer of the Word.

·        Show love for God through you obedience to His commands.

·        Love others by putting on your God transformed attitude, new level of kindness and acts of compassion.

·        Stay connected to God through His Word, prayer, Bible study, and fellowship with others believers.

·        Look to the interests of others.

·        Act like a disciple of Jesus.
