The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 87

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 87:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Psalm 22 NIV
    1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
       Why are you so far from saving me,
       so far from the words of my groaning?
    2 O my God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
       by night, and am not silent.
    3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
       you are the praise of Israel. [a]
    4 In you our fathers put their trust;
       they trusted and you delivered them.
    5 They cried to you and were saved;
       in you they trusted and were not disappointed.
    6 But I am a worm and not a man,
       scorned by men and despised by the people.
    7 All who see me mock me;
       they hurl insults, shaking their heads:
    8 "He trusts in the LORD;
       let the LORD rescue him.
       Let him deliver him,
       since he delights in him."
    9 Yet you brought me out of the womb;
       you made me trust in you
       even at my mother's breast.
    10 From birth I was cast upon you;
       from my mother's womb you have been my God.
    11 Do not be far from me,
       for trouble is near
       and there is no one to help.
    12 Many bulls surround me;
       strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
    13 Roaring lions tearing their prey
       open their mouths wide against me.
    14 I am poured out like water,
       and all my bones are out of joint.
       My heart has turned to wax;
       it has melted away within me.
    15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,
       and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
       you lay me [b] in the dust of death.
    16 Dogs have surrounded me;
       a band of evil men has encircled me,
       they have pierced [c] my hands and my feet.
    17 I can count all my bones;
       people stare and gloat over me.
    18 They divide my garments among them
       and cast lots for my clothing.
    19 But you, O LORD, be not far off;
       O my Strength, come quickly to help me.
    20 Deliver my life from the sword,
       my precious life from the power of the dogs.
    21 Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
       save [d] me from the horns of the wild oxen.
    22 I will declare your name to my brothers;
       in the congregation I will praise you.
    23 You who fear the LORD, praise him!
       All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
       Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
    24 For he has not despised or disdained
       the suffering of the afflicted one;
       he has not hidden his face from him
       but has listened to his cry for help.
    25 From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
       before those who fear you [e] will I fulfill my vows.
    26 The poor will eat and be satisfied;
       they who seek the LORD will praise him—
       may your hearts live forever!
    27 All the ends of the earth
       will remember and turn to the LORD,
       and all the families of the nations
       will bow down before him,
    28 for dominion belongs to the LORD
       and he rules over the nations.
    29 All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
       all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
       those who cannot keep themselves alive.
    30 Posterity will serve him;
       future generations will be told about the Lord.
    31 They will proclaim his righteousness
       to a people yet unborn—
       for he has done it.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 15:33-37
Read the passages below:

 Mark 15:33-37 NIV
The Death of Jesus
    33At the sixth hour darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?"—which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"[a]
    35When some of those standing near heard this, they said, "Listen, he's calling Elijah."
    36One man ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink. "Now leave him alone. Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down," he said.
    37With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

John 19:28-30 NIV
The Death of Jesus
    28Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        The darkness of sin brings separation from God.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus was quoting the first line of Psalm 22 (see above in scripture to meditate on). This psalm prophesizes the suffering the Messiah would endure on the Cross. Jesus knew he would be temporarily separated from God the moment he took upon himself the sins of the world (Because God is Holy, He can't be in the presence of sin). Jesus dreaded this separation and prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane for the “cup” (Wrath of God) to be taken away. Even though Jesus was fully God He was also fully human. In a moment of His humanity He cried out to God for Help. Jesus knew the physical agony would be horrible, but even worse the spiritual alienation from God would be the ultimate in suffering.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        The confusion of the people caused them to think Jesus was calling Elijah.
·        The people again were waiting for a sign to believe Jesus was who he said he was. They wanting to see the Prophet Elijah help Jesus down off the Cross.

The people in Jesus’ day did not understand what was happening on the cross even though the scripture and the prophets revealed the Messiah Jesus’ purpose. Many people refused to believe Jesus was that Messiah because they were looking for a political leader to defeat the Roman occupation. Many did not realize Jesus was sacrificed for their sins. Even though God taught the Jews about the sacrificial system, they missed the fact that Jesus was going to be that one sacrifice that ended the ritual of temple sacrifice and open the door for the people to have forgiveness of sin through His work on the cross.

Those who are followers of Jesus know that we can have a personal relationship with God and through faith are able to receive His forgiveness and grace. Today many people still do not grasp why Jesus had to die on the Cross.  It is also true many people feel they don’t need a Savior. They believe their good works will save them. However, we learn from God that our good works will not save us. There is nothing we can do to put us in a right relationship with God. Only Jesus’ work on the Cross is acceptable to God.  (Read scripture below)

Romans 3:23 NIV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:10 NIV
As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one;

Romans 5:8 NIV
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:19 NIV
For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

Romans 8:1 NIV
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

·        Jesus said that He was thirsty. A man offers Jesus a drink in the midst of His suffering. We too can offer comfort to those who are suffering. (Fulfilled prophecy verse below)

Psalm 69:21 NIV
They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Jesus experiences the weight of the world’s sin while on the Cross.
·        Jesus experiences separation from God and cries out to that fact.
·        Those who hear His cries think Jesus is calling Elijah.
·        A man offers a thirsty Jesus wine vinegar.
·        Some people are waiting to see if Elijah will help Jesus down off the Cross.
·        Jesus breathes His last Breath and gives up his Spirit.

  Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus willingly gave up His Spirit and foretells about this event before it happened on the cross.

John 10:18 NIV
No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

·        If people choose to live apart from God and relish a life of unrepentant sin, they will experience the suffering of being abandoned by God. This is of course is their choice, not God’s. God ultimately will give people what they want. In Roman’s Paul tells us that because people rejected God in favor of their own selfish sinful desires He gave them over to those desires:

Therefore God gave them over to: (Read Romans 1)
·        Sexual impurity.
·        Shameful lusts.
·        A Depraved mind.

Here is the Bad news and then the good news:

Romans 6:23 NIV
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us that Jesus suffered the full weight of the sins of the world.
·        To show us that Jesus fulfilled the prophecy written about the Messiah as well as what He foretold about Himself.
·        That Jesus willingly died for us.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Suffering Servant, Sacrificial Lamb, Fully man, Fully God

     B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Through His actions, the knowledge of scripture and prophecy.

     C. His emotions:
·        Jesus suffered, He was thirsty, He was abandoned by God the Father and experienced the depth of that agony and separation.

D. His views:
·        Jesus was willing to lay down His life and become the “Sacrificial Lamb” for the sins of the world. Those who receive His work on the cross by faith will be saved.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
  • Jesus loved us enough to suffer on the cross so we could have forgiveness for sin and a personal relationship with God based on His grace not our works.

 3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        Have I accepted the fact that Jesus bore all my sins on His body on the Cross?
·        What words of Jesus have I misunderstood, and what have I done to correct my misunderstanding?
·        Do I know that because of the power of His Cross Jesus will bring me through to triumph?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
 “So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
