John Bible Study - Lesson 2
Read the passage
below using the 2 different Bible translations:
John
1:6-13 New International Version (NIV)
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to
testify concerning that light, so that through
him all might believe. 8 He
himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He
was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize
him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive
him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children
born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but
born of God.
John
1:6-13 Living Bible (NLT)
6 God sent a man, John the Baptist, 7 to
tell about the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony. 8 John
himself was not the light; he was simply a witness to tell about the light. 9 The
one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the
world.
10 He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t
recognize him. 11 He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. 12 But
to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children
of God. 13 They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human
passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
Note:
Here are the 3
questions for you to answer. I have given some basic answers below the
questions to help you understand the passage. Answer the questions first
yourself before you look at my answers. Take a moment before you begin and ask
God to help you understand what you are reading.
3
questions to answer:
1. Content: What
is this passage about?
2. Lesson: What
do I learn from this passage?
3. Application: How
can I apply what I have learned to my life?
Answers
to the questions above and some background:
Content: What is this passage about?
·
God sent John The
Baptist to prepare everyone to receive the Messiah
·
The Messiah is
Jesus
·
The “world”
rejects Jesus as the Messiah
·
All who believe
in Jesus are children of God
·
All who believe
have a new spiritual birth
Lesson: What
do I learn from this passage?
·
John the Baptist
testifies about Jesus being the light, the Messiah
·
John the Baptist
is only the witness to the light, not the Messiah
·
Jesus is the
light who gives light (Truth) and new life to everyone who us willing to receive
it
·
The world continues
to reject Jesus as the Son of God
·
Salvation (deliverance
from sin and its consequences through faith in Jesus) comes to those who believe and receive Jesus as Lord
and Savior
·
All those who
believe and receive Jesus as Lord have a spiritual rebirth.
·
A spiritual
rebirth means you become a child of God, sin will no longer keep you in
bondage, no longer will you be separated from God. The Holy Spirit indwells in
you: teaching, comforting and counseling you as well as provide you with
wisdom, discernment, and the perspective you need to navigate these turbulent
times we are all facing in this broken world. You become a friend of God and
receive eternal life.
Application: How
can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·
Just as John The
Baptist told others about Jesus, we can do the same
·
We can live joyfully
knowing Jesus welcomes us into His family when we believe and take to heart He
is the True Messiah
·
Knowing and
believing in Jesus leads to a new spiritual awakening and existence. Therefore,
we can live with a new eternal perspective.
Don’t forget:
John’s main purpose
in writing this Gospel:
·
To
tell the world that Jesus is the Messiah for the Jews and Gentiles
·
The
events were recorded so that we might believe and have eternal life
John 20:30-31 New International Version (NIV)
The Purpose of John’s Gospel
30 Jesus performed many other signs in
the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that
Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have
life in his name.
Questions to
ponder:
·
Can
you imagine having a new and joyful Spirit filled life?
·
What
would it take to invite Jesus into your life?
·
Knowing
what you know about Jesus, are you willing to share your personal God encounter
story?
·
Do
you ever desire to be part of something greater than yourself?
·
What
would it be like for you to walk in God’s light day after day?
·
Do
you want the light to overcome the darkness in your life?
Have a great
week…………….Dave
