The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 90

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 90:

This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:

·        What is this passage about?

·        What do I learn from this passage?

·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Acts 2:22-28 NIV

22"Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 25David said about him:
" 'I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
      I will not be shaken.
    26Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will live in hope,
27because you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
    28You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.'[b]

John 3:16 NIV

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 16:1-8

Read the passages below:

Mark 16:1-8 NIV

The Resurrection

1When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. 2Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3and they asked each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?"

4But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.

6"Don't be alarmed," he said. "You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7But go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' "

8Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

Matthew 28:1-10 NIV

The Resurrection

1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

2There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

8So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them. "Greetings," he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

Luke 24:1-12 NIV

The Resurrection

1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' " 8Then they remembered his words.

9When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles. 11But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Jesus is risen; He is not in the tomb.

Is there a warning, command or promise?

·        The young man (angel) dressed in a white robe tells Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James & Salome that Jesus has risen!

·        He also tells the women to go and tell his disciples and Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you into Galilee. “There you will see him, just as he told you.' "

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?

·        Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome plan to anoint the body of Jesus.

Anointing:

The most common usage of anointing in the Bible is to signify that someone or something is "consecrated to a holy or sacred use."   Consecrated means "the devoting or setting apart of anything to the worship or service of God.

When Jesus Christ was crucified the curtain in the temple was torn in two and the barriers to God were removed. Christ was anointed to become our high priest.

Hebrews 3:1 NIV
Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.

Hebrews 4:14 NIV
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

Hebrews 6:20 NIV
where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

What are the main points in this passage?

·        After the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome go to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus.

·        The women found the stone rolled away and were alarmed to see a young man (angel) dressed in a white robe inside the tomb.

·        The man tells the women that Jesus has risen and points to the fact that His body is not in the tomb. He also tells the women to go tell the disciples that Jesus is going ahead of them into Galilee where they will be able to see him, just as Jesus had told them at an earlier time.

·        The women fled the tomb trembling and bewildered and said nothing to anyone because they were afraid.

Fulfillment of the prophecy:

Matthew 16:21 NIV

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

Matthew 12:39-40 NIV

He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Psalm 16:9-10 NIV

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,

because you will not abandon me to the grave,  nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

Acts 2:29-32 NIV

"Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.  But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.  God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.

Matthew 26:31-32 NIV

Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written:    " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’  But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?

·        Jesus was resurrected and there were witnesses to that fact.

The belief that Jesus was resurrected is essential to the

Christian faith. It is the point for which Christianity rises or falls.

To the Christian, salvation is dependent upon one believing and

        confessing the Resurrection as true.

Romans 10:9 NIV

That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?

·        To prove the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

·        To show that Jesus defeated death confirming the prophecy about Himself.

·        To solidify the promise of eternal life for all that believe in Jesus’ work on the Cross.

John 5:24 NIV
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

Romans 4:25 NIV
He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

2 Timothy 1:10 NIV
but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Hebrews 2:14 NIV
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:

·        The resurrected Christ, Jesus the Nazarene, The Son of Man.

     B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:

·        Through the prophets, the disciples and others who proclaim the truth about Christ.

·        Through God’s messengers, the Angel of the Lord etc. who God appoints to deliver the truth.

     C. His emotions:

·

D. His views:

·        Death will be defeated through His work on the Cross.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:

·        Jesus’ work on the Cross defeated death and made it possible for us to be reconciled back to God.  Jesus suffered and paid the ultimate price for the forgiveness of our sin. Those who choose to believe and receive His work will inherit eternal life.

John 4:14 NIV

but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

John 6:40 NIV
For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day."

 3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

·        Have I examined and believed the evidence of Jesus’ resurrection?

·        How has the assurance of Jesus’ resurrection changed my thinking or actions?

·        With whom will I share the fact of the Resurrection this week?

……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)

“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
