This
Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:
Mark 16:9-14
Mark
16:9-14 NIV
9When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared
first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10She
went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. 11When
they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe
it.
12Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while
they were walking in the country. 13These returned and reported it
to the rest; but they did not believe them either.
14Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked
them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who
had seen him after he had risen.
John
20:10-23 NIV
Jesus
Appears to Mary Magdalene
10Then the disciples went back to their homes, 11but Mary
stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb
12and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus' body had been,
one at the head and the other at the foot.
13They asked her, "Woman, why are you crying?"
"They
have taken my Lord away," she said, "and I don't know where they have
put him." 14At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing
there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.
15"Woman," he said, "why are you crying? Who is it
you are looking for?"
Thinking he was the gardener, she said,
"Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I
will get him."
16Jesus said to her, "Mary."
She turned toward him and cried out in
Aramaic, "Rabboni!" (which means Teacher).
17Jesus said, "Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet
returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, 'I am
returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' "
18Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: "I have
seen the Lord!" And she told them that he had said these things to her.
Jesus
Appears to His Disciples
19On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples
were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood
among them and said, "Peace be with you!" 20After he said
this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they
saw the Lord.
21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent
me, I am sending you." 22And with that he breathed on them and
said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his
sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not
forgiven."
Luke
24:13-16 NIV
On
the Road to Emmaus
13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called
Emmaus, about seven miles[a] from
Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about everything that
had happened. 15As they talked and discussed these things with each
other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16but they
were kept from recognizing him.

Luke 24:44-49
NIV
He
said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is
written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." Then
he opened their minds so they could
understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the
dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached
in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of
these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in
the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."
Psalm
16:10 NIV
because
you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
Isaiah
26:19 NIV
But your dead
will live; their bodies will rise. You who dwell in the dust, wake up and
shout for joy. Your dew is like the dew of the morning; the earth will give
birth to her dead.
Matthew 12:40 NIV
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge
fish, so the Son of Man will be three
days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew
27:62-64 NIV
The
next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees
went to Pilate. "Sir," they said, "we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said,
'After three days I will rise again.' So give the order for the tomb to be
made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal
the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last
deception will be worse than the first."
Mark 8:31 NIV
He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be
rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must
be killed and after three days rise again.
Mark 9:31 NIV
because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.
They will kill him, and after three
days he will rise."
Mark
10:33-34 NIV
"We
are going up to Jerusalem," he said, "and the Son of Man will be
betrayed to the chief priests and teachers of the law. They will condemn him to
death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him and spit on
him, flog him and kill him. Three days
later he will rise."
Is
there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
Those
who Mary Magdalene told about Jesus resurrection did not believe her
testimony. Also two of Jesus’ followers
who encountered Jesus on the road to Emmaus had their testimony rejected as
well. The disciples who spent time with Jesus and were witness to His miracles
and teaching also rejected the testimony of those who had seen Him after the
resurrection. Even though Peter, James and John were witnesses to the
Transfiguration of Jesus where Jesus radiated God’s Glory confirming His
divinity, they still doubted the resurrection even though God, who spoke to
them while at the mountain where Jesus was transfigured, told them that Jesus
was His Son and to listen to Jesus. Jesus earlier had prophesied that He would rise
again on the third day after his crucifixion. This means the disciples had
every reason to believe the witnesses to Jesus’ resurrection yet they did not.
Matthew
17:1-5 NIV
The
Transfiguration
1After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the
brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2There
he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes
became as white as the light. 3Just then there appeared before them
Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
4Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If
you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for
Elijah."
5While he was still speaking,
a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is
my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
·
Many
people today ignore the testimonies about Jesus based upon their hardened heart
toward the Gospel and their lack of faith in Jesus as the Savior.
·
Many
people who claim to be followers of Jesus do not demonstrate their faith with
their actions. Thereby diminishing the effectiveness of their witness to
others.

risen.
Is there a
lesson or principle that is a universal truth?

did God put this passage in the Bible?
·
To
give us more proof of Jesus’ resurrection.
·
To
show how Jesus fulfilled prophecy.
·
To
give us the confidence that God’s Word can be trusted.
What
does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:
Matthew 6:32-33 Living Bible (TLB)
“So
don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the
heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about
them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them,
and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live
as he wants you to.
John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may
have life and have it abundantly.
Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And
this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his
glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
John 14:26 (NIV)
But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Also,
remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how
we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a
fallen world:
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an
answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
But do this with gentleness and respect,
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped
for every good work.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your
word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
John 8:31-32 (NIV)
To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you
are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set
