The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 84:
This
week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to
answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers.
Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:
3
questions:
·
What is this passage about?
·
What do I learn from this passage?
·
How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
Scripture
to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:
Romans
1:20-23 NIV
For
since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and
divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,
so that men are without excuse.
For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks
to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were
darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and
exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man
and birds and animals and reptiles.
Romans
1:28 NIV
Furthermore,
since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave
them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.

This
Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:
Mark 15:16-20
Read
the passages below:
|
Mark 15:16-20 NIV
The
Soldiers Mock Jesus
16The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the
Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers. 17They
put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on
him. 18And they began to call out to him, "Hail, king of the
Jews!" 19Again and again they struck him on the head with a
staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. 20And
when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes
on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
Matthew
27:27-31 NIV
The
Soldiers Mock Jesus
27Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and
gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28They stripped
him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29and then twisted together a
crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand and
knelt in front of him and mocked him. "Hail, king of the Jews!" they
said. 30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the
head again and again. 31After they had mocked him, they took off the
robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

1. Content: What is this passage about?
·
Roman soldiers mistreated and mocked Jesus before
leading Him out to be crucified.
Who are the people if any?
·
Jesus,
the Roman soldiers.
What are they doing?
·
The
Roman soldiers take Jesus to be crucified.
Where does this take place?
·
the
Praetorium
(In the New Testament,
Praetorium refers to the palace of Pontius
Pilate, the Roman procurator of Judea. According to the
New Testament, this is where Jesus Christ
was tried and condemned to death.)
When does this take place?
·
During
the Passover.
.....................................................................................................................................
2. Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?
·
When a man is unrestricted and uninhibited, his
total depravity is revealed.
Is
there a warning, command or promise?
·
The
mocking of Jesus was part of Isaiah’s prophecy about the Messiah:
Isaiah
50:6 NIV
I
offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my
beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.
·
Also
Jesus being led to the cross was also prophesied:
Isaiah 53:7 NIV
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
Jeremiah 11:19 NIV
I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying, "Let us destroy the tree and its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more."
I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying, "Let us destroy the tree and its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more."
Notice
in the above passages the Messiah was
referred to as the Lamb. John The
Baptist declared Jesus the Lamb of God due to the fact the Jesus was the perfect sacrifice that atoned
for the sins of the world.
John 1:29 NIV
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
Is
there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
It
is obvious here how the Roman soldiers treated Jesus. They mocked Him, beat on
him, spit on Him and totally disrespected Him. Even though Jesus was innocent
He was treated like a common criminal. Each of us should look at how we treat
Jesus. God has commanded us to live a certain way. When we disregard God’s
commandments to live and pursue our own pleasures, is this not a slap in the
face to our creator? We need to put what
Jesus did for us in perspective. Jesus suffered
and died for us. Should we at least try to live a life that is pleasing to Him
in order to show Him our thanks and our love?
Here are some
passages that we can meditate on.
Romans
12:1 NIV
Therefore,
I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this
is your spiritual act of worship.
1 Peter 1:15 NIV
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;
Colossians
3:1-2
Since,
then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where
Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set
your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Colossians
3:5 NIV
Put to death,
therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual
immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
Colossians
3:9-10 NIV
Do
not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its
practices and have put on the new self,
which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.
Colossians
3:12-17 NIV
Therefore,
as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and
patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have
against one another. Forgive as the Lord
forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the
peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were
called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly
as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms,
hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed,
do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father
through him.
1 Peter 1:16 NIV
for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy.
for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy.
John 14:15 NIV
"If you love me, you will obey what I command.
"If you love me, you will obey what I command.
John 14:21 NIV
Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."
Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."
John 14:23 NIV
Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
·
Even
while He was being mocked and beaten, Jesus never condemned the Roman soldiers.
We are told to show love to our enemies
and to pray for them.
Matthew 5:44 NIV
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
·
Maybe
Jesus was praying for the Roman soldiers during the time He was being mocked,
spit upon and beaten.
What are the main points in this passage?
·
The
soldiers mock Jesus before they led Him to be crucified fulfilling the Isaiah
prophecy.
Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·
Jesus
fulfilled the prophecies written about the Messiah.
·
Jesus
was the suffering servant.
Prophecy: Old Testament:
Isaiah 53:3 (Written: Between 701-681 BC)
”He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.”
Fulfilled: New Testament: About 32 AD
In Isaiah 52:13-53:12, the prophet foreshadowed the life and mission of Jesus, who was born about 700 years later. In Isaiah 53:3, the prophet said that a servant of God would be rejected and despised. Jesus was indeed rejected by many people living in the land of Israel, and He was later crucified by the Romans.

·
If
we ignore the truth about Christ we will miss out on the potential we have as
children of God to live a life of joy and purpose.
Why
did God put this passage in the Bible?
·
To
remind us of the suffering Jesus went through to bring Salvation to the world.
·
To
show proof that Jesus was the Messiah by the fact that Old Testament prophecy was fulfilled by Him.

A.
His
attributes:

Jesus
declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the
abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:
Matthew 6:32-33 Living Bible (TLB)
“So
don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the
heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about
them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them,
and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live
as he wants you to.
John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may
have life and have it abundantly.
Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And
this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his
glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
John 14:26 (NIV)
But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Also,
remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how
we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a
fallen world:
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an
answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
But do this with gentleness and respect,
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training
in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every
good work.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your
word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
John 8:31-32 (NIV)
