And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 15:21-23
Read the passages below:

Mark 15:21-23 NIV
The Crucifixion
21A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. 22They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 23Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.

Matthew 27:32-34 NIV
The Crucifixion
32As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). 34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.

Luke 23:26-31 NIV
The Crucifixion of Jesus
26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then
“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!”’
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        Sometimes a burden that is forced upon me becomes the channel of God’s richest blessing.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus suffered on the way to the cross. We will also suffer when we carry our cross before God. It is painful to realize we are sinners, experience that sin, and then dispose of it.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        Simon carries the cross for Jesus. This carrying of the cross symbolizes what we need to do in order to become a disciple of Christ.  When follow Jesus to the cross we embrace what His work and sacrifice has done for us. When we carry our own cross we acknowledge the judgment against us because of our sin. We acknowledge our need for a Savior. We acknowledge that we need to die to selfish ambition. We understand that we need the help, strength and desire to become one who is obedient to the call God has given us. We acknowledge that with that call from God we may have to endure suffering and persecution for Christ’s sake. Yet we are blessed because we have become part of God’s family forever.

As we head toward our own physical death we can choose how
we are going to live and who we are going to live for. We
understand that suffering in this world is temporary. After we
die physically we are with Christ for eternity where there is no
longer any suffering. We understand that God is with us when
we carry our own cross. He promises to never leave us or
forsake us. He promises to equip us for ministry. He promises us
that the Holy Spirit will be our teacher, our comforter, our
strength, and our guide into the truth. We also understand that
when we go out in the world to make disciples for Christ we will
experience rejection, hatred and mocking. These experiences
are similar to what Jesus had to go through in His life.  Being a
disciple of Christ is what we are called to be.  Carrying our own
cross is a big part of that.

The blessings of carrying ones cross, identity in Christ, and Salvation:

Matthew 16:24 NIV
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Luke 14:27 NIV
And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

Romans 3:23 NIV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 5:8 NIV
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 6:22-23 NIV
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord

Galatians 5:24 NIV
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.

Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

Revelation 21:3-4 NIV
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

·        The Roman soldiers offer Jesus some wine mixed with Gall maybe to help deaden the pain of His suffering. For us it is sometimes better not to pull someone out of their circumstances in order that they would understand the full weight of their own sin. Suffering due to the sin in our lives, needs to take its course in order to bring us to a place where we truly have to turn to God for His help.  This reaching out to God brings us to a place where we can now experience His love, mercy and grace in a deeper and more intimate way.  The result of turning to God for help can change our perspective and help us experience God’s blessing in the midst of our difficult circumstances.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        While on the way to Jesus’ crucifixion the Roman Soldiers force a man named Simon to carry the cross for Jesus.
·        Jesus is brought to a place called Golgotha.
·        Jesus was offered wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after
tasting it, he refused to drink it.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus refuses to drink the wine mixed with gall after tasting it. This narcotic concoction may have deadened some of the pain Jesus was experiencing. Jesus did nothing to deaden the amount of suffering He had to endure.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us of Jesus’ willingness to suffer for the sins of the world.
·        To show us we must also carry our cross to prove we are one of His disciples. Simon’s carrying of the cross is symbolic for what we must endure as Christians.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        The Lamb of God, Sacrificial Lamb, Suffering Servant, The Christ.

     B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        By setting an example for us all. Jesus’ courage and willingness to suffer all the way to the cross shows His obedience to the Fathers plan of Salvation.

     C. His emotions:
·        In the midst of suffering, Jesus was thinking about others

D. His views:
·        He must suffer and die on the cross.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Because of Jesus’ work on the cross, anyone who chooses to believe and receive the meaning of that work as their hope of salvation can have eternal life and reconciliation with God.

 3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        How do I react when someones burden is forced upon me?
·        What burden have I borne for Jesus’ sake that will bring glory to Him and blessing to me and others?
·        Have I tried to give a worldly solution to a friend’s painful situation or have I offered to give them truth by which God’s love can help walk them through it?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
