What is this passage about?

Scripture
to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:
Psalm
16 NIV
1 Keep me safe, O God,
for in you I take refuge.
for in you I take refuge.
2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing."
apart from you I have no good thing."
3 As for the saints who are in the land,
they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. [b]
they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. [b]
4 The sorrows of those will increase
who run after other gods.
I will not pour out their libations of blood
or take up their names on my lips.
who run after other gods.
I will not pour out their libations of blood
or take up their names on my lips.
5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup;
you have made my lot secure.
you have made my lot secure.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
surely I have a delightful inheritance.
7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I have set the LORD always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will rest secure,
my body also will rest secure,
11 You have made [e] known to me
the path of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Acts 17:2-3 NIV
2As his custom
was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with
them from the Scriptures, 3explaining
and proving that the Christ[a] had to suffer and rise from the dead. "This
Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ,[b]" he said.
John
11:25 NIV
25Jesus said to her, "I
am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though
he dies;
John
2:19-22 NIV
19Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise
it again in three days."
20The Jews replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this
temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" 21But the
temple he had spoken of was his body. 22After
he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they
believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

Mark
14:26-31 NIV
26When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus
Predicts Peter's Denial
27"You will all fall away," Jesus told them, "for it
is written:
" 'I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.'[a] 28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
" 'I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.'[a] 28But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
29Peter declared, "Even if all fall away, I will not."
30"I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "today—yes,
tonight—before the rooster crows twice[b] you yourself
will disown me three times."
31But Peter insisted emphatically, "Even if I have to die with
you, I will never disown you." And all the others said the same.
Zechariah
13:7 NIV

Shepherd Struck, the Sheep Scattered

and the sheep will be scattered,

Here
is my layout for: Mark

resurrection fell on deaf ears.

and His disciples.

.....................................................................................................................................
2. Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?
·
It is easy to pledge loyalty until actual
persecution comes.
Is
there a warning, command or promise?
·
Jesus
refers to the Old Testament Scripture Zechariah
13:7 to back up His prediction that the disciples will fall away.
·
Jesus
tells His disciples that they will all fall away after His physical death.
After His resurrection He will return to Galilee.
·
Jesus
tells Peter that before the rooster crows twice, Peter will deny Him 3 times.
Is
there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
Jesus
worshiped with His disciples. As followers of Jesus we should live a life of worship.
It is also important to be part of a fellowship of believers engaging in
corporate worship.
·
Peter
along with the other disciples insisted that they would not disown Jesus even
after Jesus told Peter that He along with the other disciples would do so. It is clear Jesus’ words are the truth. If we
deny or write off what Jesus says we are in a sense denying His authority given
to Him by the Father. Jesus was without sin and would never lie. In essence we
are calling Jesus a liar if we insist that Jesus’ words are not the truth.
What are the main points in this passage?
·
Jesus worships with His disciples.
·
Jesus
affirmed Old Testament prophecy about Himself and told His disciples what was
going to happen.
·
Jesus predicts His disciples will fall away after His death on the
cross.
·
Jesus predicts that after His resurrection that His disciples will
be able to find Him in Galilee.
·
Jesus predicts Peter will deny Him 3 times before the rooster
crows twice.
·
Along with Peter, the other disciples insist that they would never
disown Jesus.
Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·
Jesus
died on the cross and 3 days later He was resurrected.
The
New Testament accounts of the resurrection were being circulated within the
lifetimes of men and women alive at the time of the resurrection. Those people
could certainly have confirmed or denied the accuracy of such accounts. The
writers of the four Gospels either had themselves been witnesses or else were
relating the accounts of eyewitnesses of the actual events in advocating their
case for the gospel. (Josh McDowell)
1
Corinthians 15:3-8 NIV
For
what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for
our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised
on the third day according to the Scriptures, and
that he appeared to Peter, and
then to the Twelve. After
that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time,
most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all
the apostles, and last of all
he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
The Resurrection
is important for these reasons:
·
The Resurrection
proves the truthfulness of the Word of God.
The
Old Testament in Psalm 16 predicts the resurrection of the Messiah. If the
Messiah doesn't rise, if Jesus Christ doesn't rise from the grave, the Bible is
not telling us the truth. But the resurrection of Christ proves that the Bible
speaks truth.
·
The Resurrection
proves the deity of the
Son of God
That
is the most monumental thing that Jesus did to verify that He was God, for only
God can give life, only God can conquer death.
·
The Resurrection
proves the completion of God’s plan of Salvation.
Romans
10:9 NIV
That
if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your
heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
1
Peter 1:3 NIV
Praise
be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has
given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ
from the dead,
The Resurrection of the Lord is the ultimate
victory over the powers of sin and death. The Resurrection is not only viewed an
historical event but also the sign of God's power over all the forces which can
separate us from Him. It is a victory not only for Christ Himself, but also for
all those united with Him in faith.
Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·
To
remind us that Jesus understood His mission and that He already knew the
outcome that His obedience to God would bring about on the cross.
·
To
help us understand Jesus’ authority and divinity by seeing the way Jesus was
able to predict the actions of His disciples as well as the location where He
could be found after the resurrection.
·
To
reaffirm the validity of Old Testament prophecy.
What
does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?
A.
His
attributes:
·
Son of God, Messiah, Divine, Fully Man, Fully
God.
B. His ways of
relating/communicating to people:
·
Through
His prophetic teaching. Through the use
of Old Testament prophecy.
C. His emotions:
·
D. His views:
·
The
events surrounding His death and resurrection were all part of God’s plan of
Salvation.
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·
Jesus
was fully engaged in God’s plan of Salvation. He understood the importance of
His mission and followed through with it willingly even though He would go through
terrible suffering.
3.
Application: How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·
Where
am I so busy objecting to the heard part of Jesus’ words that I am missing His
encouragement?
·
When
will I be silent long enough to hear what the Lord is really saying?
·
Am
I assured of my own strength – certain that “I would never do that”?
……………………………………………………………………………….......
My
prayer for you:
I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply
what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow
spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.
Jesus
declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the
abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:
Matthew 6:32-33 Living Bible (TLB)
“So
don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the
heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about
them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them,
and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live
as he wants you to.
John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may
have life and have it abundantly.
Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And
this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his
glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
John 14:26 (NIV)
But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Also,
remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how
we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a
fallen world:
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an
answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But
do this with gentleness and respect,
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped
for every good work.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your
word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
John 8:31-32 (NIV)
To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you
are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set
you free.”
