Mark 14:17-21

Read the passage below:

Mark 14:17-21 NIV
17When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. 18While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me."
19They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, "Surely not I?"
20"It is one of the Twelve," he replied, "one who dips bread into the bowl with me. 21The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

  • I can hide sin from others but not from God.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me."
·        The sign of the one who will betray Jesus will be the disciple who dips his bread in the bowl with Jesus.
·        The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        Judas betrayed Jesus.  Judas claimed to be a disciple of Jesus but secretly He planned to turn Him over the Jewish authorities.  In turn we need to live out our faith in devotion to Christ.  Any other agenda to use the name of Christ for personal gain is sin to say the least. The Bible says to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. How are we living this out?
·        Judas tried to deny the sin in His life even in front of the one who knew his heart. How are we going to live a Holy and pleasing life for God if we won’t deal with the sin our life?

What are the main points in this passage?
·        During the Passover meal Jesus reveals to His disciples that one of them is going to betray Him.
·        The disciples were saddened that this was going to happen.
·        Judas claimed he was not the one going to betray Jesus.
·        In the Matthew passage Jesus affirms it was Judas who was going to betray Him.
·        Jesus explains that His betrayal must happen. Jesus foretold His own betrayal. We find evidence of Jesus’ betrayal foretold in the Psalm 41 as well.

Psalm 41:9 NIV
Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread,
has lifted up his heel against me.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him.

John 13:3
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us again that Jesus knew the details about His work on the cross and the events leading up it. Jesus still willingly obeyed God even though He was going to suffer.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Fully man and Fully God, Son of Man

     B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Through prophecies He made about Himself.   Through His understanding and teaching about His mission and purpose.

     C. His emotions:
·        Authoritative, Firm in His conviction about sin and betrayal

D. His views:
·        His betrayal was part of God’s plan.
·        He was going to return to God after His death and resurrection.

       E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus willingly went to the cross out of a sacrificial love for God’s people and out of His obedience to His Heavenly Father. He knowingly agreed to suffer in order to restore us back into fellowship and a right relationship with God.
·        Because of what Jesus did, believers have peace with God.

Matthew 26:42 NIV
He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

Colossians 1:20 NIV
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        In what ways have I betrayed and grieved Jesus with my unconfessed sins or unrepentant heart?
·        What secret sin am I trying to hide from Jesus and others?
·        Once my sin is revealed, do I go out and do it anyway?

……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
