This
Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:
Mark 12:18-27
Read
the passage below:
Mark 12:18-27 NIV Marriage at the Resurrection 18Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 19"Teacher," they said, "Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and have children for his brother. 20Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23At the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?" 24Jesus replied, "Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the book of Moses, in the account of the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? 27He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!" |

In the Temple Courts in the city of Jerusalem.

taxes to Caesar.
.....................................................................................................................................
2. Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?
·
It is
essential to know both the Scriptures and the power of God in order to be free
from error.
Is there a warning, command or promise?
·
There will be no marriage taking
place in heaven.
“When the dead rise, they will neither
marry nor be given in marriage”
·
Those who are resurrected will be
like the angels in heaven.
·
God is the God of the living not the
dead.
Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
The Sadducees:
A Jewish religious sect in the time of Christ. They believed and accepted only
of the “Law”, the 5 books of Moses. They rejected oral tradition; they denied
the resurrection, as well as the immortality of the soul and the spirit world.
·
The Sadducees did not know the
scriptures or the power of God. They had
a limited perspective on God’s Word because they chose to believe in their own
interpretation of scripture and limited themselves to the first 5 books of the
Bible known as the Torah.
·
When we alter the meaning of God’s
Word we no longer have a Godly perspective.
·
When we decide to read only a small
portion of scripture negating other books of the Bible, we do not get the whole
picture of how God’s Word fits together perfectly reinforcing what is both in
the New Testament and the Old Testament.
·
The Bible Is God’s story which must
be read in its entirety.
What are the main points in this passage?
·
The Sadducees do not believe in the
Resurrection.
·
The Sadducees question Jesus about
marriage and the Resurrection.
·
Jesus tells them that did not know what
the scripture says and for that reason have missed out on the power of God’s Word.
·
Jesus tells them that there will be
no marriage in heaven. He also reinforces the fact for there being a
Resurrection by using Scripture from the book of Exodus. So the Sadducees line
of questioning about the Resurrection shows that they don’t even have a good
understanding of the Torah.
·
Jesus explains that those who have
died and have gone to heaven will be like the angels.
·
Jesus also explains to them that God
Is the God of the living. He used Scripture taken from the Torah to prove it.
·
Jesus uses the illustration of the “Burning Bush” to prove His point.
Exodus 3:6:
"I am the God of your father,
the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac
and the God of Jacob”
·
Jesus tells the Sadducees that their
view of the Resurrection is way off base.
·
The Sadducees are unable to support
their view about there being no resurrection. In fact Jesus once again uses
God’s Word to show how the “Jews” did not understand scripture and therefore
were unable to see that He was the one foretold by the prophets to be their
Messiah.
Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·
There will be no marriage in heaven.
·
Those resurrected will be like the
angels in heaven.
·
God is the God of the living.
·
There will be a Resurrection.
Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·
To show that Scripture supports
everything Jesus said about the Resurrection.
·
To show the importance of reading
and understanding God’s Word.
·
To give us hope and a glimpse of
what will happen after the Resurrection.
What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?
A.
His attributes:
·
Teacher, Knowledgeable of Scripture
and the kingdom of heaven.
B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·
Through scripture and illustration.
C. His emotions:
·
Jesus was stern in His condemnation
of the Sadducees.
“You Are Badly Mistaken!”
D. His views:
·
There will be a Resurrection.
·
God is the God of the living.
·
God’s Word is powerful and truthful.
·
No marriage in heaven.
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·
Jesus continues to be trustworthy because
He correctly teaches God’s Word which we now can apply to our everyday lives.
·
Jesus helps us live life with an
eternal perspective.
3. Application: How can I apply what I have learned
to my life?
·
How much time and effort do I give
daily to know the Scriptures?
·
In what way am I depending on God’s
power and claiming His promises in the Scriptures?
·
What does the Scripture say about
the resurrection and the life hereafter? (Look up “resurrection” and “heaven”
in a concordance.)

My
prayer for you:
I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply
what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow
spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.
Jesus
declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant
life, providing for us physically and spiritually:
Matthew 6:32-33 Living Bible (TLB)
“So
don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the
heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about
them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them,
and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live
as he wants you to.
John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may
have life and have it abundantly.
Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And
this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his
glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
John 14:26 (NIV)
But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Also,
remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how
we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a
fallen world:
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an
answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
But do this with gentleness and respect,
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped
for every good work.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your
word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
John 8:31-32 (NIV)
To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you
are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set
you free.”
