The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 59

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 59:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

  John 5:46-47 NIV
If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since
you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"

Mark 7:6 NIV
He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

Luke 12:56 NIV
Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?

Hebrews 13:17 NIV
Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 12:13-17

Read the passage below:

Mark 12:13-17 NIV
Paying Taxes to Caesar

13Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. 14They came to him and said, "Teacher, we know you are a man of integrity. You aren't swayed by men, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? 15Should we pay or shouldn't we?"
But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. "Why are you trying to trap me?" he asked. "Bring me a denarius and let me look at it." 16They brought the coin, and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"  "Caesar's," they replied.
17Then Jesus said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's."
And they were amazed at him.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        One has a duty to the state and to God; some material wealth is owed to the state but one’s life fully belongs to God.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's."

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        We should not deceive others.
·        We should not discredit those who speak God’s truth.
·        We must communicate to others Godly wisdom.
·        We must be aware that there are those who are trying to cause division in the church by discrediting Jesus’ ministry in favor of their own personal gain.  (ex. The Pharisees)

Matthew 7:15 NIV
Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

2 Corinthians 11:12-15 NIV
And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about.  For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.  And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

·        We should also watch out for those who use flattery to deceive us.

Romans 16:17-18 NIV
I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Some Pharisees and Herodians are sent to entrap Jesus into making statements that could get Him arrested.
·        They purposely gave the impression that they believed that Jesus’ had wisdom and authority from God even though they truly didn’t believe it.
·        They asked Jesus whether or not they should pay taxes to Caesar.
·         Jesus knew what they were up to and called them Hypocrites (those who pretend to have beliefs, virtues and feelings that one does not truly possess) because they lied about their beliefs and purpose for asking Jesus for wisdom.
·        Jesus then teaches them about paying taxes and submitting to authority.
·        The Pharisees and Herodians were amazed at His teaching.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Even though we are under an established government authority, God is to be the main authority in our lives. We must fully submit our lives to Him.
·        God commands us to submit to those who are in authority over us. Jesus taught this principle by pointing out that since Caesar had authority over Jerusalem, and the monetary system had Caesar’s portrait and inscription on it, taxes should be paid to Him.
·        Paul taught in Romans 13:1-2 that God is the one who establishes authority and we must submit to that authority otherwise we are rebelling against God and bringing judgment on ourselves.

Romans 13:1-2 NIV
Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.  Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

1 Peter 2:13 NIV
Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To teach us about submitting to authority.
·        To show us how Jesus handled situations with integrity and wisdom.
·       To make us aware that even today, the enemy will use any method to discredit Jesus and His Authority. Some of those forces are even infiltrating the Church.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Teacher, Man of Integrity, Wise counselor.

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Through His teaching of God's principles.

     C. His emotions:
·

D. His views:
·        Those who claim to know God and try to discredit Jesus clearly show their Hypocrisy.
·        We must submit to our authorities.
·        God establishes authority.
·        Give to God what is God’s.
·        Pay what we owe to the established authority.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus teaches us the truth about God’s Word.
·        Jesus models wisdom and integrity regardless of the situation.

3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        What do I owe the government and what do I owe God?
·        Am I careful to pay my taxes honestly and give my mind, soul, and body to God joyfully?
·        How will I demonstrate Christ’s poise by speaking the truth without seeking to please or injure anyone?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
