The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 58

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 58:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

John 1:10-14 NIV
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.  The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Isaiah 53:5-6 NIV
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.

Mark 10:45 NIV
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Acts 10:45 NIV
The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.

Acts 11:18 NIV
When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, "So then, God has granted even the Gentiles repentance unto life."

Acts 26:23 NIV
that the Christ would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim light to his own people and to the Gentiles."

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 12:1-12

Read the passage below:

Mark 12:1-12 NIV
The Parable of the Tenants
1He then began to speak to them in parables: "A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. 2At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.
6"He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, 'They will respect my son.'
7"But the tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' 8So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
9"What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10Haven't you read this scripture:
" 'The stone the builders rejected
      has become the capstone[a];
    11the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes'[b]?"
12Then they looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        Because Israel rejected Jesus, their privileges were taken away and given to the Gentiles. Even though God offers many chances, ultimate rejection results in missing eternal life and in being set aside from useful service.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Those who follow Christ will be persecuted and some will be killed.
·        Jesus will be killed at the hand of the religious leaders.
·        Those who reject Christ will be punished.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        Before Christ, God sent people to tell others to repent from their sin and to turn back to Him. Many of those who God sent were rejected, persecuted and killed. Unlike those tenants who refused God’s truth, we should receive God’s truth and turn away from our sin. We should devote ourselves to Christ who came to save us from the ultimate consequences of our sin and restore us back into right relationship with God.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Jesus tells His disciples, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders a parable known as the “Parable of the Tenants”.
·        Jesus was really speaking directly to those who opposed Him and His earthly ministry.
·        Basically Jesus is explaining that the tenants of vineyard, the religious leaders, are rejecting God’s truth. Throughout history they have killed the prophets (servants) who were sent to correct them and turn their hearts back to God.
·        Jesus goes on the prophesize His death at the hands of these religious leaders.
·        Because of their sin, the religious leaders will remain under God’s wrath and will face the consequences of eternal separation from Him. The inheritance of God’s kingdom will go to those who put their faith in Jesus and serve Him. In this case since Israel rejected Jesus as their Messiah the Gentiles will be grafted into God’s Kingdom. (The passage below confirms that the Mystery of the Gospel pertains to the Gentiles being grafted into God’s Kingdom sharing in the promises of God with Israel)

Ephesians 3:4-6 NIV
In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

·        The religious leaders plot to arrest Jesus but were afraid to do so at that time because of the crowd.
Note:
·        The religious leaders were unwilling to believe God’s truth even though they understood scripture and prophecy.

 What the Parable Represents:
·        The landowner – represents God
·        The vineyard – His Kingdom
·        The tenants – specifically Israel’s religious leaders and all who
                                  reject Him
·        The servants – God’s prophets and faithful believers
·        The beloved son – Jesus Christ

·        Jesus reinforces His parable with scripture. He quotes from
     Psalm 118:22-23.

" 'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone”

·        Jesus refers to Himself as the capstone; The top stone of a structure or wall. This stone was very important as it held the structure of a building together.  Jesus is the head of the Church and actually is responsible for holding everything together.

Colossians 1:15-17 NIV
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.  He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        This parable follows closely Jesus’ life and purpose.
·        Jesus will be rejected by many.
·        Jesus will be killed.
·        Those who reject Jesus will face the wrath of God.
·        Many Believers will be persecuted and even killed because of their faith.
·        The Gentiles are also grafted into God’s family.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us that followers of Jesus will be hated and persecuted and even killed.

John 15:18 NIV
"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

·        To remind us that Jesus had a purpose for coming into this world.
·        To remind us that there are consequences for rejecting God.
·        To reveal to us the mystery of Christ.  Gentiles will also be grafted into God’s kingdom.

The foretelling of Jesus’ role in Salvation:

Isaiah 42:6 NIV
"I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles,

Isaiah 49:6 NIV
he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Savior, Son Of God, Teacher

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Through Parables and quoting scripture.

     C. His emotions:
·

D. His views:
·        Those who reject Jesus will remain under God’s wrath.
·        God’s promises to Abraham included the Gentiles.

Genesis 17:4 NIV
"As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus had fulfilled His mission. For those who put their faith in Him, have eternal life and are now restored back into right relationship with God.

John 5:24 NIV
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.

Romans 1:17 NIV
For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith

3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        How Am I demonstrating responsibility for what God has entrusted to me?
·        What is my response to God’s beloved Son, Jesus Christ?
·        What truth in scripture have I understood but rejected?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
