This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 11:1-11

Read the passage below:

Mark 11:1-11New International Version (NIV)
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”
They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
“Hosanna!”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”
“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

As rightful king, Jesus deserves praise and the use of anything He desires.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus sends two of His disciples to get Him a colt from a nearby village. Jesus tells them that they will find a colt there designated to fulfill His purpose for riding into Jerusalem.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        When God calls us to fill a need for His Kingdom we should respond by doing what He asks of us.
·        Obedience to God shows love to Him.

John 14:15 NIV
If you love me, you will obey what I command.

·        We should all honor and praise God by living a life that is Holy and pleasing to Him.

Scripture reinforcement:

1 Corinthians 6:20 NIV
you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Romans 12:1 NIV
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.

1 Thessalonians 4:7 NIV
For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.

·        We should praise Jesus and honor Him as the Lord and Savior of our life.

Scripture reinforcement:

Colossians 3:17 NIV
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

1 Peter 4:11 NIV
If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

·        Jesus modeled for us an example of a humble servant by riding into Jerusalem on a colt and not as the warrior king. The Jews were looking for a King like David who would defeat their political enemies but Jesus came as the lamb of God, the Prince of Peace.

Scripture reinforcement:

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!

John 6:14-15 NIV
After the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus did, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself.

Matthew 20:28 NIV
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Isaiah 9:6 NIV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

What are the main points in this passage?
·         Jesus tells two of His disciples to get Him a colt for the purpose of fulfilling the prophecy concerning His Kingship.

The fact that every Gospel has an account of the “triumphal entry” of our Lord into Jerusalem indicates to us that it is indeed a most significant event. On our Lord’s part, it is a most dramatic and emphatic claim to be the Messiah, the “King of Israel.” At the same time, it is a fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9.

Zechariah 9:9 NIV
Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!  Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!        See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

This event took place at the climax of Jesus’ ministry.  This event proclaimed who He was: “The Son of David”, The King of Kings”.

·        Many people spread cloaks and branches on the road as a sign of honor and praise to their King.
·        The people shouted praises to Jesus. They used the word Hosanna which means “Save”. They also repeated a praise from Psalm 118:25-26:

Scripture reinforcement:

Mark 11:9-10 NIV
Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,
"Hosanna! "
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!"
"Hosanna in the highest!"

Psalm 118:25-26 NIV
O LORD, save us; O LORD, grant us success.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.
From the house of the LORD we bless you.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus is the Messiah (Son of David). The Lord of Lords. The King of Kings.
·        Jesus fulfilled prophecy concerning Himself.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us that Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords entered Jerusalem on a lowly colt, fulfilling to the minutest detail the prophecies concerning the Messiah. He did not enter riding the white charger of an earthly king but as the Prince of Peace on a lowly beast of burden.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Messiah, Humble,  Sovereign (Jesus knew in advance a colt would be waiting for Him)

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        By His example. Jesus modeled for others humility and servant hood at the same time being the Messiah and King.

     C. His emotions:
·        In the Luke passage Jesus wept.  Jesus wept over Jerusalem because God's own people refused to comprehend the light that made Him known, He knew that the children of Israel rejected Him as the Messiah and as a consequence, Israel would be cut off for a time, fiercely assaulted and scattered among her enemies.  In 70AD Jerusalem was terribly destroyed.

D. His views:
·        Jesus understood the need to fulfill God’s purpose. Fulfilling prophecy gives weight to the inerrancy of scripture.

      E.  Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus is the Messiah. He came to save us from the eternal consequences of our sin.

3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        If Jesus asks for something I have, am I willing to give it up without question?
·        Do I praise Jesus only with the crowd, or am I willing to be His disciple when everyone else is silent?
·        Where am I to be obedient like Christ in the face of opposition?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
