This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 10:46-52

Read the passage below:

Mark 10:46-52 New International Version (NIV)
Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight
46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.
The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”
52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Persistent calling upon Jesus opens spiritually blind eyes.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus tells Bartimaeus to go, his faith has healed him.

Jesus reveals an important reasons why He came into this world:

John 12:46 NIV
I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

Jesus tells us that the righteous live by faith:

Romans 1:17 NIV
For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,  just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.

·        Jesus tells His followers to call to Bartimaeus and tell him to come to Him.   “Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." So they called to the blind man, "Cheer up! On your feet! He's calling you." (Mark 10:49)

Followers of Jesus are called to share the "Good News":

Mark 16:15 NIV
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.

2 Timothy 4:2 NIV
Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        When we sincerely ask Jesus to help us, when we have faith that He will, we shall receive the help we need in a way that glorifies God.

·        Bartimaeus made a specific request of Jesus. We should make specific requests to God when we pray or ask for help.

When we need wisdom God will answer that prayer because as followers of Jesus we need all the wisdom we can get::

James 1:5-6 NIV
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.  But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Bartimaeus recognized Jesus as the “Son of David” which is symbolic name for the prophesied Messiah.
·        Bartimaeus asked Jesus for mercy.
·        Many people rebuked Bartimaeus for requesting mercy from Jesus.
·        Bartimaeus continues to call to Jesus. Jesus stops and tells His followers to call to Bartimaeus to come to Him. (We have also been commissioned by God to tell others about the Gospel. Matthew 28:19)
·        Bartimaeus jumps to his feet and comes to Jesus.
·        Jesus asks Bartimaeus what he would like Him to do.
·        Bartimaeus tells Jesus that he wants to be able to see.
·        Jesus tells Bartimaeus to go and that his faith has healed him.
·        Immediately Bartimaeus received his sight and began to follow Jesus.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·         Our faith will impact the way our prayers are answered.

Here are some verses that confirm faith's role in answered prayer:

Matthew 21:22 NIV
If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

Mark 11:24 NIV
Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Matthew 9:29 NIV
Then he touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith will it be done to you"

·        Jesus healed many because of their faith. (See verses below)

Matthew 8:13 NIV
Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour.

Luke 8:50 NIV
Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed."

Matthew 9:2 NIV
Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."

Matthew 9:22 NIV

Matthew 15:28 NIV
Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

·        The righteous will live by faith.

Faith plays a huge role in a believers life:

Luke 7:50 NIV
Jesus said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

John 2:11 NIV
This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

John 14:12 NIV
I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

Acts 6:7 NIV
So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Acts 16:5 NIV
So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

Romans 3:22 NIV
This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference,

Romans 3:28 NIV
For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·         To make us aware that we should live by faith and not by sight.
·        To remind us of Jesus’ healing power.
·        To give us a glimpse of how followers of Jesus will participate in helping others come into a
      saving relationship with Him.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Powerful, Healer, Merciful, Son of God (Jesus, Son of David)

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·         Through personal interaction, miracles and the understanding of the human condition.

     C. His emotions:

D. His views:
·        Those who demonstrate faith are open to being in God’s will.
·        Our faith will set us free from the blindness and bondage of sin.
·        Jesus healed those who believed He was the Son of God and believed He had the power to heal
       them.

      E.  Reasons for us to love Him more:
·         Jesus can and will open our eyes to the truth through the demonstration of our faith.

3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        What specific things do I want Jesus to do for me today?
·        Will I daily ask Jesus to show me my blindness, confess it, ask for healing and follow His guidance?
·        In what ways have I persisted in seeking Jesus when others have rebuked me and told me to stop?
……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
