The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 37

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 37:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Romans 5:1-5 NIV
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,  through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.  Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;  perseverance, character; and character, hope.  And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

28 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”
29 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Sooner or later each man will have to make a decision about who Jesus is.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus warned His disciples not to tell anyone about Him.

Question: Why would Jesus not want the disciples to tell others who
                  He was?

·        Jesus wanted to reveal himself at the proper time, a time He saw fit.
·        The disciples could possibly hinder Jesus’ ministry by focusing more on the miracles than the truth about Him being the Messiah.
·        Jesus wanted to travel without calling to much attention to Himself. Jesus did not want to create a sideshow wherever He went. His main purpose was to preach the Gospel.
·        People would hear about Jesus’ miracles and would come from great distances to be healed by Him.
          ·        Do we just come to Jesus to get healed and then go our own way when
things are OK? Do we only call on God when we need His Help? Jesus wanted
the world to know the truth about Himself. He wanted people to know that He
was the Messiah and that His purpose was to save the people from eternal
               separation from God.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        When someone asks us about Jesus we should be able to tell them about who He is, and about the impact that He has had on our lives.
·        Jesus questioned His disciples to see where they were in their  understanding of who He was. Jesus was preparing His disciples to preach the Gospel to the world.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        On the way  to the villages of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus
asked “Who do people say I am?”
·        The disciples told Jesus that some thought He was John The Baptist, Elijah or one of the prophets.
·        Jesus tests His disciples to see how they have grown in their faith and understanding about who Jesus really was.
·        Jesus asks Peter “Who do you say I am?”
·        Peter replied “You are the Christ”.
·        Jesus tells the disciples not to reveal His identity.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus is the Christ. The Messiah for the Jews and Gentiles.
·        Our faith will be tested by God.

James 1:2-4 NIV
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

1 Thessalonians 2:4 NIV
On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.

 Hebrews 11:17 NIV
By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son,

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To make us think about how we will respond to God when our faith is tested. Will we say to others that Jesus’ is our Lord and Savior?
·        To remind us of this question: Do we live as secret disciples or do we profess with our mouth that Jesus is the Lord and Savior of our lives?

1 Peter 3:15 NIV
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect

Romans 10:9-10 NIV
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·         Jesus is the Messiah. Jesus is Lord.

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Jesus questioned the disciples about their faith and understanding about who He was.

C. His emotions:
·

D. His views:
·        Jesus was going to fulfill His mission on God’s timetable.

E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus is the Messiah and the Hope of the world.

Matthew 12:21 TNIV
In his name the nations will put their hope

……………………………………………………………………………………..
3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        What words do I use to describe Jesus?
·        How does my character and conduct reflect my confession of Christ?
·        What will I do to help others know who Christ is?

……………………………………………………………………………….......
My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
