The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 38

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 38:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Ephesians 5:15-17 NIV
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.

Proverbs 9:10 NIV
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Romans 1:16 NIV
I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

Matthew 26:42 NIV
He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 8:31-33

Read the passage below:

Mark 8:31-33 New International Version

Jesus Predicts His Death
31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Seeing from God’s perspective makes possible discernment of God’s purposes and the power to rebuke Satan’s attempts to hinder.
Interfering with God’s will is a partnership with Satan.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus would suffer.
·        Jesus would be rejected by the elders and chief priests and the teachers of the law.
·        Jesus would be killed and then be resurrected in 3 days.
·        Jesus tells Peter “get behind me, Satan! You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

This verse tells us how we can get a Godly perspective:

Romans 12:2 NIV
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        We should not doubt the promises of God.
·        We need to pay attention to what the Bible says.
·        We should test everything we hear with what the Bible says.
·        Because we are human we cannot possibly know the mind of God.

God tells us:

Isaiah 55:8 NIV
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD.

·        We should not only read God’s Word but we should apply it to our lives as well.

God’s Word is also our best protection from the lies of the enemy:

Galations 6:10-18
The Armor of God
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

·        Through reading God’s Word we can learn how to walk with God.
·        The Bible is our resource for abundant life and Godly living.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Jesus predicts that he will suffer, be rejected, die and then be resurrected in 3 days after His death.
·        Peter rebukes Jesus .( an act or expression of criticism and censure)
·        Jesus rebukes Peter in front of the disciples.
·        With His rebuke, Jesus is telling Peter that Peter does not understand that Jesus’ death was part of God’s plan of Salvation.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Jesus died on the cross and then was resurrected to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.
·        Many Jews to this day still reject Jesus as the Messiah.
·        Christians will suffer and be persecuted because of their faith.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
      ·        To emphasize that Jesus’ suffering, rejection, death on the cross and
Resurrection were all part of God’s plan of salvation.
·        To remind us that all these events surrounding Jesus’ birth death and resurrection were prophesied hundreds of years before they took place.
·         To remind us that Jesus fulfilled prophecy.

·        Read Isaiah 52: 13-15  also  Read Isaiah 53 (for prophecy about Jesus)

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Jesus is the Messiah.  Teacher.

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Through His teaching

C. His emotions:
·        Jesus rebuked Peter.

D. His views:
·        Jesus was willing to carry out God’s plan of Salvation.

E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus died to save us from God’s wrath.

……………………………………………………………………………………..
3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        Do my words reflect God’s perspective or mine?
·        Where are my ideas, opinions or plans being used by Satan to hinder or frustrate Christ’s goals?
·        Where am I tempting someone to reject God’s will because it involves suffering or sacrifice?

……………………………………………………………………………….......
My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
