This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 6:17-29

Read the passage below:

Mark 6:17-29 New International Version
17 For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20 because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[a]; yet he liked to listen to him.
21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.22 When the daughter of[b] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, “Ask me for anything you want, and I’ll give it to you.”23 And he promised her with an oath, “Whatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”
24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.
25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”
26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison,28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29 On hearing of this, John’s disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Unconfessed sin multiplies and affects others

(Scripture link: Matthew 14:1-12)

Who is Herod: Herod Antipas reigned as Tetrarch/King over the regions of Galilee and Perea. Herod’s Father, Herod The Great, ruled during the time of Jesus’ birth.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        The promise Herod made to his wife’s daughter cost John his life.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·         Be careful what you promise others. (Herod was distressed over having to keep his promise to give his stepdaughter the head of John The Baptist.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Herod had been gave orders to arrest John The Baptist because Herodias his wife did not like the fact that John said it was unlawful for Herod to marry her.
·        John was put in prison.
·         Herodias wanted John The Baptist killed, but because Herod feared John and protected him, she was unable to do so.
·        Herod protected John because he believed John to be a righteous and holy man.
·        Herod like to listen to John but was puzzled by the things John said.
·        Herod threw himself a birthday party. At the party Herodias’ daughter danced for him and the guests.
·        Herod  made an oath to give her anything she wanted because he was so pleased with the way she  entertained him and his guests..
·        The girl asked her mother what she should ask for.  Herodias believed this was her opportunity to have John Killed.
·        Herodias told her daughter to ask for John’s head.
·        Even though he was distressed, Herod kept his oath and had John beheaded.
·        John’s head was brought to the girl on a platter. She in turn gave the platter to her mother.
·        John’s disciples came and took his head and had him buried in a tomb.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        Even though Herod heard John’s message to repent he relented to Herodias and her wish to have him put in prison. We also have heard the call to repent but have relented to our desire to do life our own way.
·        We are either a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness. There is no grey area when it comes to whose side we are on. We are either with God or against Him. We cannot serve two masters.
·        The sin our life will affect others.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To show that sins reigns in those who do not believe in the Gospel of truth.
·        To show the level of depravity that sin can manifest  in a persons life.
·        To make us aware of the need to repent from our sin.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God/Jesus?
A. His attributes: God is Sovereign and had a purpose for John's life and death
B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:   Through people like John The Baptist. Who are telling others to repent from their sinful lives
C. His emotions:
D. His views: Those who do not repent from sin can cause others to sin. (ex. Herodias)
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:   Jesus gave His life to free us from the penalty of sin.

……………………………………………………………………………………..
3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        From What un-confessed sins will I repent?
·        In what ways are my words and actions causing my children and grandchildren to sin?
·        Of what foolish, prideful promise will I repent?

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
