Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:
Mark 7:1-23
Read
the passage below:

7:1-23 New International Version
That Which Defiles
7 The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus 2 and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3 (The
Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a
ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When
they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And
they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups,
pitchers and kettles.)
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?” 6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me. 7 They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.’
8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”
9 And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.” 14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” [16] 17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods clean.) 20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.” |

Jesus
rebukes the Scribes and Pharisees for teaching man made traditions as God’s
truth.
Who are the people if any?
·
Jesus, some of his disciples, the Pharisees
along with some of the teachers of the law.
What are they doing?
·
Some
of the disciples were eating food without first washing their hands as the
ceremonial law dictated.
The Pharisees and some the teachers
of the law confronted Jesus about this.
Where does this take place?
·
In
the region of Galilee.
When does this take place?
·
Probably
after Jesus walked on water.

2. Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?
True religion upholds God’s truth, not man’s
tradition.
Is
there a warning, command or promise?
·
Jesus
said, “nothing outside a man can make him unclean by going into him. Rather, it
is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean.”
·
Jesus
declared all foods to be clean based on the fact that “nothing that enters a
man from the outside can make him unclean.”
·
The
heart is what makes a man unclean. In the heart lies the evil thoughts and
desires that come from our sin nature.
Is
there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
We
should not let go of the commands of God by following the traditions of men.
·
We
should not teach man made traditions as God’s truth.
·
If
we only Worship God through a ceremonial act then we do not honor Him.
·
God
created us to be in fellowship with Him.
Going through the motions will not connect us with God in the intimate way
He desires.
What are the
main points in this passage?
·
When
the Pharisees and the teachers of the law see the disciples not following the
tradition of a ceremonial washing before eating, they confront Jesus and question
Him about it.
·
Jesus
points out the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law by giving
them an example of how they use a loophole to break the commandment to honor
your mother and father.
·
Jesus
declares that nothing outside a man makes him unclean by taking it in. A man is
already unclean because of what is already in his heart, the sin nature.
·
Jesus
declared all foods clean using this example.
·
Jesus
points out all the evils that make a man unclean.

A

It

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?

show us that God is more concerned with the heart of a man, his inner thoughts
and desires, as opposed to the outward appearance of a man’s deeds.

Pray! Ask God to help you understand the passage
of scripture you are
reading.

learning.
·
Write down your thoughts and prayers. Seek to
understand what God is
trying
to teach you.
·
Begin to make changes in your patterns of behavior in
accordance to
God’s teaching.
· Act on
God’s answer to prayer.
· Put
God first in your life in every area of your life
(Marriage,
Parenting, Ministry, Work etc.).
· Be
determined to make quality & quantity time for
God in your life
(ex. Quiet time, prayer
time, Bible reading/study).
