Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 6:1-6

Read the passage below:

Mark 6:1-6 New International Version
A Prophet Without Honor
6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village.

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

The hardest place to witness is in one’s hometown.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        The miracle of a changed life can only come from believing and receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior.
·        The hardest place to share the gospel is to one’s own family and close friends.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        We need to pay attention to Jesus teachings and take them to heart.
·        We need to apply Jesus teachings to our lives.
·        We need to honor Jesus with our belief in His work on the cross.
·        We need to continue to share the gospel even though we will meet up with opposition.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Jesus was teaching in a synagogue in Nazareth, His hometown.
·        Many people who heard Jesus speak were amazed at His teaching.
·        Other people took offense to Jesus because of His family ties and job as a carpenter.
·        The people could not accept Jesus’ authority to teach and perform miracles.
·        Jesus made light to the fact that He was treated without honor. (A prophet without honor in His Hometown)
·        Jesus did few miracles in Nazareth. He healed some sick people.
·        Jesus was amazed at the lack of faith of the people in Nazareth.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        A prophet is without honor in His Hometown
·        Opposition and lack of faith in Jesus are common in those who follow their own self interests.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To helps us understand the human condition and that in our natural sinful state we oppose God and run away from Him.
·        To show us that even when Jesus was opposed He continued to teach the good news.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God/Jesus?
A. His attributes:  Teacher, full of wisdom, power to perform miracles and
                                healing.
B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:   Through His teachings.
C. His emotions: Amazed at the lack of faith in Nazareth.
D. His views:  We need God’s help to understand and desire the truth.
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:   He willingly gives us the truth.

……………………………………………………………………………………..
3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        Have I focused on Jesus’ humanness that I have missed the fact that He is God- all powerful and sovereign?
·        Where in my life is Jesus’ power being stifled or limited because of my shadow faith in Him?
·        How would Jesus respond to my view of Him – am I amazing Him with my unbelief or my faith?
·        Am I willing to continue to witness in my family and community even though I don’t see results?

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
