The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 11:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Luke 10:27 NIV
He (Jesus) answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself."

Psalm 34:14 NIV
Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Galatians 6:10 NIV
Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

This week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Read the passage below:

Mark 2:23-3:6 New International Version (NIV)
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath
23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”
25 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”
27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Mark 3:1-6
Jesus Heals on the Sabbath
Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.”
Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.
He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored. Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodian’s how they might kill Jesus.

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Since Jesus is Lord of all, His followers need not be imprisoned by man-made interpretations of His laws.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        Jesus did good things and helped others on the Sabbath.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Jesus and the disciples went to pick some heads of grain on the Sabbath probably to help feed the hungry.
·        The Pharisees accused Jesus and the disciples that picking grain on the Sabbath was unlawful.
·        Jesus answers the Pharisees by explaining that the law does not forbid doing good works on the Sabbath.
·        Jesus refers to Old Testament writing to explain about how David also did good works on the Sabbath to help his companions when they were in need. (They ate consecrated Bread which was lawful for only priests to eat.)
·        At another time Jesus went into the Synagogue and healed a man’s shriveled hand.
·        Those who were there waiting to accuse Jesus of an unlawful act remained silent when Jesus said, “Which is unlawful on the Sabbath: to do good or do evil, to save life or kill?”
·        Jesus was deeply distressed and angry at those who were plotting against Him, who had stubborn hearts.
·        The Pharisees and the Herodian’s plotted to kill Jesus.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·         The Son of Man is Lord even on the Sabbath.
·         We should avoid having a legalistic approach and relationship with God.
We should open our hearts to having a truthful authentic personal
            relationship with God.
·        We should avoid judging others based on legalism. (strict conformity to the letter of the law rather than its spirit)…see verse below:

Galatians 2:16 NIV
Know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To show that Jesus’ refusal to obey the restrictive and harmful man-made laws did not violate the “spirit” of the Sabbath. (What God intended the Sabbath to be)
·        To remind us that the Sabbath was not supposed to be a joyless ritual but a day we rest and remember God.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God/Jesus?
A. His attributes:  Jesus cared about the hungry and those who needed healing.
B. His ways of relating/communicating to people: Jesus spoke to others referring to scripture & biblical truth.
C. His emotions:  Angry, deeply distressed.
D. His views:  It is OK to do good works on the Sabbath.
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:  Jesus put Himself in Jeopardy for our sake.

3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        How much of my thinking is dominated by man’s interpretation of God’s law?
·        Do I see the law through the person of the Lord Jesus Christ?
·        How am I grieving Jesus by my hardness of Heart?
…………………………………………………………………………………….....

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will take care of the rest of the things in our lives:

(Matthew 6:33)   "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well"

In your life, put God first, and He will take care of "all these things."

Also remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 NIV
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 ESV
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32New International Version (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
