Mark Chapter 1:14-20

  1. Content: What is this passage about?
After John’s imprisonment, Jesus begins preaching repentance and
belief, and called the first 4 disciples to follow Him.

Who are the people if any?
Jesus, Simon, Andrew, James, John, Zebedee.

What are they doing?
Jesus is proclaiming the Good News of God in the town of Galilee. Jesus calls for Simon, Andrew, James & John to follow him. Simon, Andrew, James, John, Zebedee were fishing.

Where does this take place?
In Galilee by the sea.

When does this take place?
After Jesus was baptized by John. After John was put in Prison.

2. Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

Following Jesus results in becoming fishers of men.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
We need to repent and believe the Good News of God.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
We need to follow Jesus when He calls us without hesitation.

What is/are the main truth/truths of this passage?
Like Jesus we are called to be fishers of men and proclaim the Good News. Simon, Andrew, James, & John probably had heard Jesus preach and were ready in their hearts to take that step of commitment to follow Jesus.
Just like a fisherman Jesus casts His net for us.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
We need to repent from our sin and follow Jesus. As a result of becoming a follower of Jesus we have the desire to lead others to Christ.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
To help us understand that we need to communicate God’s truth to all those people He puts in our path.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God?

His attributes:  God loves us, His love for us is displayed in His desire to make us His disciples.
His ways of relating/communicating to people:  He used Jesus & He uses ordinary people to proclaim the Good News.

His emotions: through Jesus God shows enthusiasm for us to know the Truth.

His views:  He desires for us to repent and become followers of Jesus

Reasons for us to love Him more:  He continues to seek after us even if we don’t seek after Him.

3.   Life Application (Personal):

Does my response to Christ include both repentance from sin and belief in Christ as my Savior?

What do I need to leave behind in order to follow Jesus?

Will I obey Christ’s call today without delay?

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will take care of the rest of the things in our lives:

(Matthew 6:33)   "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well"

In your life, put God first, and he will take care of "all these things."
