This
Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:
Mark 14: 10-11
Read
the passage below:
Mark
14:10-11 NIV
10Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief
priests to betray Jesus to them. 11They were delighted to hear
this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand
him over.
Luke
22:1-6 NIV
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was
approaching, 2and the chief priests and the teachers of the law
were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the
people. 3Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the
Twelve. 4And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of
the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5They
were delighted and agreed to give him money. 6He consented, and
watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was
present.
Matthew
26:14-15 NIV
14Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the
chief priests 15and asked, "What are you willing to give me
if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver
coins. 16From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him
over.
John
6:70-71 NIV
70Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet
one of you is a devil!" 71(He meant Judas, the son of Simon
Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

·
Greed and hate can to lead to betrayal of Jesus.
Note: Info from all
4 Gospels will be used to get more detailed info.
Is there a warning,
command or promise?
·
Judas
promises the chief priests to betray Judas for 30 silver coins.
This
event was prophesied in Zechariah:
Zechariah
11:12-13 NIV
12 I told them, "If you think it best, give me my pay; but if
not, keep it." So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.
13 And the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the potter"-the
handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver
and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter.
Is
there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
Money
meant more to Judas than Jesus. The Bible says we cannot serve to masters:
Luke 16:13 NIV
"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
"No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
· Jesus should be the focus of our life. Our relationship with Jesus is forever. Money only has a temporary value for us. We cannot purchase our way into heaven. We cannot even purchase a joy filled life because true lasting joy comes from our relationship with God.
Psalm 16:11 NIV
You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Psalm 19:8 NIV
The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
Psalm 119:111 NIV
Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.
Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.
What are the main points in this passage?
·
Judas promises the chief priests to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of
silver.
·
The Chief priests were delighted that Jesus would be handed over
to them.
·
Judas was waiting for the right opportunity to hand Jesus over to
the Chief Priests.
Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·
Judas’
betrayal of Jesus was used by God as a part of the fulfillment of His plan of
salvation.
Acts
2:23 NIV
This
man was handed over to you by God's set
purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to
death by nailing him to the cross.
·
According
to Jesus, Judas acted as an instrument of Satan.
·
Judas’
sin was used as part of God's ordained plan. That is, there is a sense in which
God willed the delivering up of his Son, even though the act was sin on Judas’
part.
·
Jesus
chose Judas as a disciple knowing this man would betray Him. It is interesting
that God would choose the sin of a man as part of the fulfillment of His plan.
Maybe to emphasize the fact that:
We are all
sinners and our sin separates us from God:
Romans
5:12 NIV
Therefore, just as sin entered the world
through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men,
because all sinned.
Jesus had to go
to the cross in order to save sinners from God’s wrath. Jesus did this willingly in obedience to
His Father.
Romans
5:18-19
Consequently, just as the result of one
trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of
righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. For just as through the disobedience of
the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the
one man the many will be made righteous.
Why did God
put this passage in the Bible?
·
To
remind us that we cannot serve two masters.
·
To
remind us that the love of money is the root of all evil.
What
does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?
A.
His
attributes:
·
Fully man, Fully God.
B. His ways of
relating/communicating to people:
·
Jesus had authority from God to reveal what is
to come.
John
6:70-71 NIV
Then Jesus replied, “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of
you is a devil!” (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of
the Twelve, was later to betray him.)
C. His emotions:
·
D. His views:
·
Those
who betray Jesus are instruments of Satan.
·
Those
who value money and things of this world over the richness of God, are enemies
of God.
James 4:4 NIV
You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·
Even
though Jesus knew Judas would betray, Jesus never prevented Judas from his evil
intent. Jesus allowed Himself to be
arrested and crucified in order to fulfill God’s purpose; that salvation would
be available to all who received Jesus as Lord and Savior. Jesus suffered for our sake.
3. Application: How can I apply what I have learned
to my life?
·
What
has priority in my life – money or Jesus?
·
Does
my behavior delight or convict Jesus’ enemies?
·
How
do I use my opportunities – to exalt or to betray Jesus?
……………………………………………………………………………….......
My
prayer for you:
I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you
apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow
spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.
Jesus
declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the
abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:
Matthew 6:32-33 Living Bible (TLB)
“So
don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the
heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about
them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them,
and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live
as he wants you to.
John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may
have life and have it abundantly.
Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And
this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his
glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
John 14:26 (NIV)
But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach
you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Also,
remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how
we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a
fallen world:
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an
answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
But do this with gentleness and respect,
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training
in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every
good work.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your
word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
John 8:31-32 (NIV)
To
the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you
are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set
you free.”
