The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 71

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 71:

This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:

·        What is this passage about?

·        What do I learn from this passage?

·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Mark 8:31 NIV
He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again.

Mark 11:18 NIV
The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

Luke 20:19 NIV
The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 14:1-2

Read the passage below:

Mark 14:1-2 NIV

1Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him. 2"But not during the Feast," they said, "or the people may riot."

Matthew 26:1-6 NIV
The Plot Against Jesus

1When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2"As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."
3Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him. 5"But not during the Feast," they said, "or there may be a riot among the people."

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

·        Even those who claim to be “religious” and Godly plotted against Jesus.

Note: I am going to use Matthew 26:1-2 to put more perspective on the answers.

1When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2"As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."

Is there a warning, command or promise?

·        Jesus said he was going to be handed over to be crucified.

·        The chief priests and the teachers of the law are planning on arresting and killing Jesus.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?

·        The chief priests and the teachers of the law where plotting against our Lord. We should never subvert or undermine our relationship with God for personal gain.

·        The chief priests and the teachers of the law would not arrest Jesus during the Passover and the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. Not because they respected God’s appointed celebration but to keep the people from rioting.

·        The chief priests and the teachers of the law acted out of fear and out of God’s will. We should do the opposite. (Read passage below)

Matthew 23:2-3 NIV

"The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.

·        The chief priests and the teachers of the law knew the scripture and prophecy concerning the Messiah yet they chose to reject Jesus. In the same way we can have a lot of head knowledge about God’s Word and still reject it because it doesn’t fit with the way we chose to Lord over our own lives.

Take this passage to heart:

John 5:36-40 NIV

I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me.  And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.  You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

What are the main points in this passage?

·        The chief priests and the teachers of the law were plotting to arrest Jesus and have Him killed.

·        The chief priests and the teachers of the law decided to wait till after the Passover and Feast of the Unleavened Bread to avoid rioting by the people.

·        From the Matthew passage Jesus states that He will be handed over to be crucified.

·        Jesus foreknew what was going to happen.  He prophesied His own death.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?

·        Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion was part of God’s plan of Salvation.

Scripture regarding God’s plan of Salvation:

Matthew 20:28 NIV

just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Mark 9:31 NIV

because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise."

Luke 22:42 NIV

"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."

Luke 22:37 NIV

It is written: 'And he was numbered with the transgressors; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment

John 3:16 NIV

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?

·        To remind us about the fallen state of the Jewish leaders and at the same time showing that what they were about to do to Jesus, would be part of God’s plan of salvation.

·        To remind us that Jesus understood what His purpose was and was well aware of what He had to go through.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:

·        The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the World.

John 1:35-36 NIV

The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"

Isaiah 53:7 NIV

He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:

·        Through His prophetic teaching and understanding of God’s will.

          C.   His emotions:

D. His views:

·        Jesus understood His sacrifice for the sins of man was part of God’s plan of salvation.

·        Jesus knowing His fate, was willing  to go through with God’s plan

      E. Reasons for us to love Him more:

·        Jesus gave His life willingly to save us from our sins.

3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

·        How can I be alert to the evil intentions of others?

·        Where am I adhering to religious ceremony and tradition while trying to get rid of Jesus in my life?

·        What secret dislike in my life could flare into hatred and hurt another?

……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)

“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)

But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
