Too Funny! Puddy claims to be a Christian but in reality is only concerned about himself and his own spiritual condition. Elaine on the other hand complains to Puddy saying that he doesn't care about her spiritual condition nor the fact that she is going to hell. The principles here are as follows:
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others (Philippians 2:4)
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:15)
Puddy displays a bit of hypocrisy especially when he tells Elaine to steal her neighbors newspaper. Even though Puddy won't steal it based on his claim that he is a Christian, he tells Elaine it is OK for her to take it based on the fact that she is already going to hell. Puddy does not realize that he himself is also guilty of the same wrong if she takes it. "Thou shall not steal" quotes Puddy. Jesus had a word for the hypocrites as well: Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the law of Moses. So practice and obey whatever they tell you, but don’t follow their example. For they don’t practice what they teach. They crush people with unbearable religious demands and never lift a finger to ease the burden. (Matthew 23:1-4)
Puddy listens to Christian radio, has a Jesus fish displayed on his car, and quotes scripture, but does not reflect the new nature of a real follower of Jesus. One who truly follows Jesus displays a real heart transformation which includes a real sense of right and wrong as well as love for God and love for others. This supernatural love is the essential attribute in a believers new identity..........Dave
