John Bible Study - Lesson 6
Read the passage
below using the 2 different Bible translations:
John
2:1-12 New International Version (NIV)
Jesus
Changes Water Into Wine
On
the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was
there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been
invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone,
Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.”
4 “Woman, why
do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”
5 His mother said
to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Nearby stood six
stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each
holding from twenty to thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to
the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told
them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They
did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the
water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come
from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the
bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out
the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too
much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”
11 What Jesus did
here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he
revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
12 After this he
went down to Capernaum with his mother and
brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.
John
2:1-12 New Living Translation (NLT)
The
Wedding at Cana
The
next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in
Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and
his disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3 The
wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They
have no more wine.”
4 “Dear woman,
that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
5 But his mother
told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6 Standing nearby
were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold
twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus told the
servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been
filled, 8 he said, “Now dip some out, and take
it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his
instructions.
9 When the master
of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come
from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom
over. 10 “A host always serves the best wine
first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the
less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
11 This miraculous
sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his
disciples believed in him.
12 After the wedding
he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his
disciples.

Lesson: What
do I learn from this passage?
·
Jesus’
mother Mary knew that Jesus had the power to do something to solve the wine
supply problem. Mary knew the purpose for which Jesus was born:
Luke
1:26-38 New International Version (NIV)
The
Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth
month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to
Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin
pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The
virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her
and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly
troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But
the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.
31 You will conceive and
give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and
will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the
throne of his father David,
33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his
kingdom will never end.”
Matthew
1:18-25 New International Version (NIV)
Joseph
Accepts Jesus as His Son
18 This is how the
birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be
married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant
through the Holy Spirit.19 Because Joseph her husband
was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to
public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had
considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because
what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She
will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took
place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to
a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke
up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took
Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate
their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
·
Jesus
felt the timing of revealing Himself was a little pre-mature yet He honored His
mother’s request.
·
When
Jesus explained His time has not yet arrived He was describing the fulfillment
of the purpose God sent Him. Jesus is the sacrificial Lamb, the Messiah, that
would come and save His people from sin and spiritual death
John
1:29 New International Version (NIV)
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and
said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
·
Jesus
has supernatural power to change water into wine
·

the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that

life in his name.

6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
·
After
reading the above passage will you give God a chance to make your path
straight?
Have a great
week…………….Dave
