The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 62:
This
week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to
answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers.
Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:
3
questions:
·
What is this passage about?
·
What do I learn from this passage?
·
How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
Scripture
to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:
John
1:14 NIV
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Matthew
1:20-23 NIV
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
All
this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will
call him Immanuel" which
means, "God with us."

This
Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:
Mark 12:35-37
Read
the passage below:
Mark
12:35-37 NIV
(Whose Son Is the Christ)
35While Jesus
was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, "How is it that the
teachers of the law say that the Christ[a] is the son of David? 36David himself,
speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:
" 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." '[b] 37David himself calls him 'Lord.' How then can he be his son?" The large crowd listened to him with delight. Scripture Links: Matthew 22:41-46 Luke 20:41-44Note: in order to gain more info for this Bible study passage I have used the Matthew passage to help me.
Matthew
22:41-46 NIV
(Whose Son Is the Christ )
41While the Pharisees were
gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42"What do you think
about the Christ[a]? Whose son is he?" "The son of
David," they replied.
43He said to them, "How is
it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him 'Lord'? For he says,
44" 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet." '[b] 45If then David calls him 'Lord,' how can he be his son?" 46No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. |

2. Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?
·
The Messiah is both God (David’s Lord) and man
(David’s Son).
Is
there a warning, command or promise?
·
From
Psalm 110:1 David acknowledges the
coming Messiah.
"
‘The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand
until I put your enemies under your feet."
until I put your enemies under your feet."
Jesus uses this verse to prove His
point about who the
Messiah is.
Is
there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
Jesus
asks a question to the Pharisees in order to teach them about the Christ. We
too can ask questions in order to engage others in a spiritual discussion.
·
The
Pharisees do not have a complete understanding of God’s Word. They are not able
to comprehend that Jesus is the Christ. They believed that the Messiah would be
a human descendant of David and would be a political leader.
1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
The Pharisees: The Pharisees
were a major Jewish sect from the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD. The Pharisees
appear as Jesus' most vocal critics. They observed of the letter of the law rather
than the spirit of the law.
Jesus
said this about the Pharisees:
Luke
11:52 NIV
Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."
Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."
·
We
must be different than the Pharisees. We must understand the spirit of the law.
We must understand who Jesus is and be able to tell others through our words
and actions.
What are the main points in this passage?
·
Jesus
challenges the Pharisees concept of the Messiah.
Jesus questions the Pharisees about the
Christ, and whose son He is.
·
The
Pharisees say that He is the son of David.
·
Jesus
then teaches the Pharisees about the Christ.
·
Jesus
quotes Psalm 110:1in order to show them that David refers to the Messiah as
Lord.
Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·
Jesus
is Lord, the Messiah.
·
Jesus
is both fully God and fully man.
·
David
spoke of the Messiah as Lord. David understood this through the wisdom gained
from His relationship with God and the Holy Spirit.
·
The
Holy Spirit will give believers the right words in order to speak God’s truth.
Here are some
Bible passages that show the Holy Spirit giving us the right words to speak:
Luke
12:12 NIV
for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."
Matthew 10:20 NIV
for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
John 15:26 NIV
"When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.
"When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.
1 Corinthians 2:12 NIV
We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.
We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.
1 Corinthians 2:13 NIV
This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words
This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words

Jesus

abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:
Matthew 6:32-33 Living Bible (TLB)
“So
don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the
heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about
them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them,
and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live
as he wants you to.
John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may
have life and have it abundantly.
Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And
this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his

John 14:26 (NIV)
But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will
teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Also,
remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how
we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a
fallen world:
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an
answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.
But do this with gentleness and respect,
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped
for every good work.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your
word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
John 8:31-32 (NIV)
