The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 52

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 52:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Philippians 2:1-8 NIV
If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,  then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.  Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.  Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.   Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:   Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,  but made himself nothing, taking the very nature  of a servant, being made in human likeness.   And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross!

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 10:41-45

Read the passage below:

Mark 10:41-45 New International Version (NIV)
41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

The way up is down no matter what the world thinks.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.
·        Whoever wants to be first must be a slave of all.
·        Jesus said that he did not come to be served but to serve.
·        Jesus said that he would give His life as a ransom for many.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·                          Jesus did not come to be served but to serve. We should also look at our lives
and see where we can serve God using the gifts and talents He has given us.
·                          We should strive to have a Christ-like character.

What are the main points in this passage?
·                          When the other 10 disciples heard what James and John requested of Jesus
               they became indignant with them.
·                             Jesus calls the disciples together to set the record straight.
·        Jesus said that His followers should to serve others and be different than those in authority who Lord over others and misuse their high position to be served by others.
·        Greatness in the kingdom of God is servant hood.
·        Jesus was willing to become a slave of all. Just as a slave submits himself to authority, Jesus gave His life in submission to the Father to fulfill the mission and purpose He was given.
·        Jesus emulated humility and a willingness to submit to God. His actions were honorable and rewarded by God.
·        Jesus points to himself as the model for His disciples to emulate.
·        Jesus wants us to be servant leaders.
·        Ultimately Jesus said he would give His life as a ransom for many.

John 10:14-16 NIV
I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen (The Gentiles). I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        We need to serve God and serve others using Jesus as our model.

John 13:12-17 NIV
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them.  "You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am.  Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.  I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.  I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.  Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Matthew 23:11-12 NIV
The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To remind us about the importance of serving others. When we serve others we are serving God.
·        So we would use Jesus as our model for servanthood. God’s desire is for us to be like Jesus.
·        To remind us that Jesus gave His life so that all people could be saved. Jesus’ purpose was to fulfill God’s plan of salvation.

What does the passage reveal about the character of : God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Teacher, Son of God, Savior.

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·        Jesus modeled a servants heart.

B.   His emotions:
·

D. His views:
·        Those who are followers of Jesus should be servant minded.
·        Followers of Jesus should look different than the prevailing culture. Whereas the culture promotes self, Jesus tells us to deny ourselves for the sake of our soul.  Serving for the benefit of others is Christ-like behavior.

Matthew 16:24-26 NIV
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.  What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?

1 Peter 4:10-11 NIV
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.  If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

     E.  Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus gave His life as a ransom for many.

3.  Application:  How can I apply what I have learned to my life?
·        Do I become indignant toward another’s weaknesses when that same weakness is in me?
·        What is my motivation in serving Christ or His people?
·        What practical things can I do today to reflect Christ’s example of servanthood toward those in my home? My job? My church?

……………………………………………………………………………….......

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
