This
Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:
Mark 10:17-22
Read
the passage below:
Mark
10:17-22New International Version (NIV)
The Rich and the Kingdom of God
17 As Jesus
started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him.
“Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18 “Why do you
call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You
know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery,
you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not
defraud, honor your father and mother.’”
20 “Teacher,” he
declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”
21 Jesus looked
at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you
have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come,
follow me.”
22 At this the
man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Here
is my layout for: Mark 10:17-22
1. Content: What is this passage about?
A
rich, devout man leaves sad when Jesus tells him to sell his possessions, give
to the poor, and follow Him.
Scripture links: Luke 18:18-23 (The
Rich Ruler)
Matthew 19:16-22 (The
Rich and the kingdom of God)
Who are the people if any?
·
Jesus
and the rich young man.
What are they doing?
·
The
rich young man asks Jesus about eternal life.
Where does this take place?
·
Unsure, not enough evidence to pinpoint the exact
location.
When does this take place?
·
According
to the Gospel of Mark it appears this happened after Jesus’ teaching of
“Childlike” faith.
.....................................................................................................................................
2. Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?
The cost of eternal life is an undivided heart.
Is
there a warning, command or promise?
·
Jesus
tests the young man’s motives by laying out some of the commandments:
·
Do
not murder.
·
Do
not commit adultery.
·
Do
not steal.
·
Do
not give false testimony.
·
Do
not defraud.
·
Honor
your father and mother.
·
Go
sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven. Then come follow me.
Is
there an example to follow or not to follow?
·
We
should obey the 10 commandments but they in themselves will not save us.
·
We
should follow Jesus and live by faith. We can trust Jesus and give up our
desire to own our own lives. We should desire spiritual richness over material
wealth.
·
We should store
up our treasure in heaven not on earth.
Matthew
6:19-20 NIV
Treasures in Heaven
Treasures in Heaven
"Do
not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy,
and where thieves break in and steal. But store
up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy,
and where thieves do not break in and steal.
·
Jesus
set the example: We should help others
in need.
(ex. The poor)
·
If
Jesus tells us to do something we should
obey Him.
What are the
main points in this passage?
·
A
man asks Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life.
·
Jesus
explains that since no man is “Good”
or is made righteous by following the law alone, the only way to
inherit eternal life is by following Him.
Romans
3:9-12 NIV
No One is Righteous
No One is Righteous
What
shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have
already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. As it
is written: “There is no one
righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one
who seeks God. All have turned away,
they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”
Galatians 3:11 NIV
Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith “
Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith “
·
The
young man is unable to do what Jesus asked of him so He went away sad.
John 3:36 NIV
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him."
Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·
In order to inherit eternal life we must
follow Jesus.
Luke 16:13 TNIV
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
"No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
John 5:24 NIV
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.
John 6:27 NIV
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."
Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."
John
10:27-28 NIV
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand.

need for a Savior.
·
To
show Jesus’ love for the lost.
·
To
remind us to help others in need.
Luke 9:23 NIV
Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

……………………………………………………………………………….......
My

spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.
Jesus
declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the
abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:
Matthew 6:32-33 Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having
enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all
these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father
already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you
if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.
John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The
thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And
this same God who takes care of me will
supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us
in Christ Jesus.
John 14:26 (NIV)
But
the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of
everything I have said to you.
Also,
remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how
we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a
fallen world:
1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But
in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.
Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the
reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is
God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in
righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good
work.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to
my feet and a light to my path.
John 8:31-32 (NIV)
