The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 41

The Gospel Of Mark Bible Study Lesson 41:
This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:
·        What is this passage about?
·        What do I learn from this passage?
·        How can I apply what I have learned to my life?

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

Malachi 3:1 TNIV
"I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty.

Luke 18:31 NIV
Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.

Luke 24:25-27 NIV
He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.

Acts 10:43 NIV
All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Mark 9:9-13

Read the passage below:

Mark 9:9-13 New International Version
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what “rising from the dead” meant.
11 And they asked him, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
12 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? 13 But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

When I ask Jesus honest questions, He will patiently direct me to more important issues.

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        Jesus tells Peter, James and John not to tell anyone what they saw happen on the mountain until Jesus’ resurrection.
·        Jesus will suffer and be rejected.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        Because Peter, James and John did not understand what the prophets had already said about the coming of the Messiah, Jesus had to explain it to them.
·        We need to understand what scripture says in order to have a greater understanding of God’s plan of Salvation.  This will help us better explain the Gospel to others.

What are the main points in this passage?
·        While coming down the mountain Jesus tells the disciples not to tell anyone about the Transfiguration until after the resurrection.
·        The disciples were trying to figure out what “risen from the dead” meant.
·        The disciples question Jesus about Elijah concerning the coming of the Messiah.
·        Jesus explains that symbolically Elijah had already come.  (John the Baptist was the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus to come.  John’s task is to pave the way for the coming of the Messiah. He was particularly commissioned to prepare the hearts of the people for Jesus’ coming.)

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        John the Baptist paved the way for Jesus.
·        Jesus would suffer and be rejected.
·        Jesus knew He would be rejected, suffer, die and then be resurrected.

Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To show us how the prophecy concerning Jesus would be fulfilled.
·        To show us that Jesus is the Messiah that the prophets had written about.
·        Even though not directly stated, Jesus was acknowledging John The Baptist’s role in God’s plan of Salvation.
·        To remind us about the importance of God’s Word as our source for truth.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God/Jesus?

A.   His attributes:
·        Teacher, Messiah, Son of God

B. His ways of relating/communicating to people:
·         Jesus explained what the prophets had written about Him.

C. His emotions:
·

D. His views:
·        Many times Jesus told His disciples and others not to tell what they had seen Him do. Jesus did not want His ministry to become a side show for miracles. He wanted others to look to the scriptures to see what the prophets said about Him.
·        Jesus wanted His disciples to understand that the prophecies relating to Him (the Messiah) were being fulfilled according to God’s plan of Salvation.

     E. Reasons for us to love Him more:
·        Jesus suffered and died for our sake.
·        Jesus reveals to us God’s plan of Salvation.

3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        Do I come to Jesus with my concerns and questions about the Bible?
·        How do I listen for answers?
·        In what areas has Jesus shown me to step out today?

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33  Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19 New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26 (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 (NIV)
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32  (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
