This week’s Bible Study of Mark’s Gospel will again include questions for you to answer. Once you finish the lesson on your own. You can look at my answers. Anytime you do Bible study ask yourself these 3 questions:

3 questions:

Scripture to meditate on before you do this week’s Bible study:

James 1:12 NIV
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

Deuteronomy 8:2 NIV
Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the desert these forty years, to humble you and to test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

This Week’s Bible passage from the Gospel of Mark:

Read the passage below:

Mark 4:35-41New International Version (NIV)
Jesus Calms the Storm
35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Here is my layout for Mark 4:35-41:

1.    Content: What is this passage about?

Jesus calmed the storm at sea when His fearful disciples cried out to Him

Who are the people if any?
·        Jesus and His disciples.

What are they doing?
·        Crossing a body of water on a boat.

Where does this take place?
·        In Galilee on a body water. Possibly the lake where Jesus taught his disciples and others.

When does this take place?
·        Still early in Jesus’ ministry.

.....................................................................................................................................

2.    Lesson: What do I learn from this passage?

There is no reason to be afraid of anything when Jesus is with me

Is there a warning, command or promise?
·        God will test our faith.

Is there an example to follow or not to follow?
·        We need to trust God in difficult circumstances.
·        If we say we believe in Jesus, we should have faith in His power to save us.
·        We should not be afraid because Jesus is always with us.

Deuteronomy 31:8 NIV
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

What are the main points in this passage?
·        Jesus and His disciples decided to get on a boat and travel to the other side of a lake away from the crowd.
·        A furious squall came up and began to rock the boat and frighten the disciples.
·        Jesus was sleeping while the storm began to hit.
·        The disciples woke Jesus up and were concerned about whether Jesus cared about the possibility of them drowning.
·        Jesus got up and quieted the storm by speaking the words “Quiet! Be still!
·        Jesus asked his disciples why they were so afraid.  He asked the question “Do you still have no faith”.
·        Still terrified the disciples wondered how Jesus could command the wind and waves to obey Him.
·        They began to question who Jesus really was.

Is there a lesson or principle that is a universal truth?
·        God is in Control of His creation.
·        Jesus saves us when we ask Him to intervene in our lives to become our Lord and Savior.
·        Our faith will be tested.

Galatians 3:11 NIV
Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith."

·        Why did God put this passage in the Bible?
·        To teach us about faith.
·        To teach us by using the example of the storm, that when we call on Jesus to save us, He will.
·        To show us He has the power to save.

What does the passage reveal about the character of God/Jesus?
A. His attributes:  Powerful, Caring, Compassionate.
B. His ways of relating/communicating to people: Through personal interaction and testing of faith.
C. His emotions:  Jesus loves us.
D. His views:  We are be saved by faith.
E. Reasons for us to love Him more:   We are saved because of our faith.  It is what Jesus has done on the cross and not how perfectly we have followed the law that saves us.  Because if we had to follow the law perfectly, we would all be condemned to Hell. For these reasons:

Romans 3:23 NIV
“All have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God”.

Romans 3:10 NIV
“There is no one righteous not even one.”

3.    Life Application (Personal):
·        When there is a storm in my life, who do I call on first, my friends or Jesus?
·        What habits can I cultivate that will allow me to experience the peace of His presence?
·        What attribute of God’s character has he shown me in the midst of my storm?

My prayer for you:

I pray you will take God’s Word to heart and ask God to help you apply what you have learned. I hope and pray that this Bible Study helps you grow spiritually by deepening your faith, trust and love for God.

Jesus declared that if we seek God, he will provide everything we need to live the abundant life, providing for us physically and spiritually:

Matthew 6:32-33Living Bible (TLB)
“So don’t worry at all about having enough food and clothing. Why be like the heathen? For they take pride in all these things and are deeply concerned about them. But your heavenly Father already knows perfectly well that you need them, and he will give them to you if you give him first place in your life and live as he wants you to.

John 10:10English Standard Version (ESV)
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Philippians 4:19New Living Translation (NLT)
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

John 14:26New International Version (NIV)
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Also, remember the importance and impact of embracing of God’s Word in light of how we are to be God’s Ambassadors and Teachers, as well as to live abundantly in a fallen world:

1 Peter 3:15 NIV
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Psalm 119:105 ESV
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John 8:31-32New International Version (NIV)
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
